Duel...Make That.. Disaster In The Desert

Almost as embarassing as a '76 Gremlin Levi's Special, that game! But as Nurse Jeff and I consoled ourselves to the loss, we wondered why the game wasn't on KT'R-FM? hmmmm..let's see: there was a Suns game; the Cardinals were playing Saturday night; Lovable Jay and Dave Ramsey were more important. Nope, nope and nope. So why was the biggest AZ college game of the season the exclusive domain of the Anciently Modulated Sports Parkinglot 6~Twenty? Dunno...but somehow we think if the Sun Devils ever make it to the Rose Bowl, the game would be on 92~Three. Wrong call on the game, coach!

First of all: WHICH embarrassing game this weekend! Ugh. Watched everybody lose but Wisconsin!

Second of all: I don't think it makes a difference either way does it? ASU vs. U of A on 620 and not 92.3? Everybody by now who might even choose to listen to the game on the radio knows of Arizona Sports 620. I think Rose Bowl COULD be a different story, but then I could also see it only airing on 620.

What radio station will host the Dennis Erickson & Lisa Love going away party?

And soon, I hope. (Even though I am a closet Wildcat fan)

I thought all ASU football and men's basketball games were on 620, and if there was a conflict with the D'backs or Suns (remember them?), those teams would be moved to FM.

Coming soon to AM & FM Sports Parkinglots! Love may be lost, but Erickson is toast.

The Territorial Cup is a very big deal. Given the larger available audience on FM and the lack of anything more compelling last Saturday night, it should have been on 92~Three.

Every time I see this thread I am reminded of an old judge in Baltimore, years ago, who said, "If I ever get motion for trial by duel I am granting it".

Interesting debate, but how many people listen to the "Duel in the Desert" on radio as opposed to watching it on TV??? And BTW, GO CATS!!! :))

Exactly, and sports on 620 is nothing new to anyone wanting to listen to sports on the radio.

So why not serve two different audiences at the same time?

Radio is FM, not Ancient Modulation. And you're right...most people watched it in Hi-Def on FSAZ. Except for Nurse Jeff, he watched the game on the back seat of the Gremlin (Marquis de Sade inspired). That DirectTV antenna on the roof sure looks weird

and BTW, GO AWAY DENNIS!! :))

Borrowed from another thread, but underscores the success Sportstalk (especially on FM) enjoys:

Sports delivers very efficiently male adults. And agencies and many direct accounts want to reach adult males. So while sports stations are not always as high rated as the Detroit sports FM which is #1, they generally are top tier billers, even in less active sports towns.

A good example is WFAN in New York... seldom above 14th or 15th in 12+ ratings, but top 5 in male demos... and many times in the last two decades has been the market leader in billings.

The Buckeye Boyz stand by their very biased opinion that there is an opening a mile wide for Sportstalk on FM in the Valley and 98~Seven is in the driver's seat.

Agreed. I like the occasional decent sports talk show (Rome, Gambo) as a break from all the Nazi talk on AM. And an FM station would be a nice break from the God-awful nighttime signal of KDUS. Tip o' the fez to the good Doctor!

Yes KDUS is only 500 watts at night but if you buy and HD radio it's on KDKB HD2, KDKB spent $750,000 on their new transmitter site and they have the most powerful HD signal in the western United States

An HD what? Haven't seen one of those for sale in a couple of years.

Yes you do have to look to find an HD radio, Audio Express has them, Best Buy, Crutchfield, seen some at Fry's. I have one in my car, two in the house and more new cars have them standard although most car sales people push XM or Pandora not HD

An HD radio is on my list. The Fry's Electronics on Thunderbird unfortunately only carries one.

Don't knock if you have no experience with it. HD radio is great. Or be a fool and pay for Sirius XM.

Now, would it make more sense for Sandusky to invest their 2012 Phoenix engineering capital toward upgrading KUPD's transmission system (which is probably the worst of the South Mountain 100kW signals at this time) so it's as modern as KDKB's, or has the decision been made regarding KAZG's new transmitter? :D

I have a lot of experience with HD radio and I've found that, at least here in Phoenix, it's a total waste of money. The different formats available on FM HD in Phoenix don't appeal to me and, I'm sorry, but putting AM signals on FM HD is not the answer. My biggest knock is that portable HD units are almost non-existent and the one that I do have has horrible reception of signals. Using the portable unit on the east side, HD stations fade in and out which, for anyone who has used HD radio, is horrible because the signal will totally drop out, unlike normal FM which will just have static interference with the station still audible. The problem: HD signals don't get out as far as analog signals.

On the other hand, I have Sirius XM, and the portable unit I have is great and gets great signal coverage across the city. I can walk around with it, use it in the car or at home, whereas it would take three different HD radios to do the same thing. Yes, you do have to pay for it, but unlike HD radio, it has the selection I want. Looking for 50's and 60's oldies in Phoenix? Well, of course we have the lovely Lumberyard, but come night-time or Radio Khushi time, I have to tune into my XM radio. Looking for dance, classical, jazz, new age, techno, 40's music, blues, 20 different kinds of rock? Sirius XM has it, Phoenix radio doesn't. Want to listen to practically any major sporting event? Sirius XM will have it, whereas Phoenix radio probably won't have it and if they do, it'll probably be on a crummy AM signal.

So my synopsis? HD radio is a joke and if you really want variety and selection, you can turn to Sirius XM. Yes, it sucks that you have to pay, but most people already pay for cable TV because the selection from normal broadcast channels is limited. It's practically the same thing with satellite radio. The NAB and Ibiquity may be jamming HD radio down our throats, but that doesn't mean it's good. And while I'm at it, what's the deal with AM HD? Honestly, who here listens to AM HD radio? You think the selection of FM HD radios is bad, good luck finding an AM HD radio. As of a few months ago, there's wasn't a single portable AM HD radio available. Not to mention, AM HD wreaks havoc on side channels and has contributed to the degradation of the KDUS signal at night thanks to our friends at CBS and KNX 1070. If anything, the people on here who work for Sandusky should be opposed to HD radio because it's one of the major contributing factors to why people can't listen to KDUS at night here in Phoenix. Thank you HD radio! ::)

I haven't seen one at the Tempe Fry's or Ahwautkee Best Buy in quite a while.

I had Sirius in the rental cars I drove this past summer. I wasn't impressed and I wouldn't pay for it.

The IHeartRadio, Radio.com (CBS), and TuneIn apps on my Android phone aren't perfect, and the data plan for smartphones isn't free either, but they're still better than either HD or satellite radio.
