Don't knock if you have no experience with it. HD radio is great. Or be a fool and pay for Sirius XM.
I have a lot of experience with HD radio and I've found that, at least here in Phoenix, it's a total waste of money. The different formats available on FM HD in Phoenix don't appeal to me and, I'm sorry, but putting AM signals on FM HD is not the answer. My biggest knock is that portable HD units are almost non-existent and the one that I do have has horrible reception of signals. Using the portable unit on the east side, HD stations fade in and out which, for anyone who has used HD radio, is horrible because the signal will totally drop out, unlike normal FM which will just have static interference with the station still audible. The problem: HD signals don't get out as far as analog signals.
On the other hand, I have Sirius XM, and the portable unit I have is great and gets great signal coverage across the city. I can walk around with it, use it in the car or at home, whereas it would take three different HD radios to do the same thing. Yes, you do have to pay for it, but unlike HD radio, it has the selection I want. Looking for 50's and 60's oldies in Phoenix? Well, of course we have the lovely Lumberyard, but come night-time or Radio Khushi time, I have to tune into my XM radio. Looking for dance, classical, jazz, new age, techno, 40's music, blues, 20 different kinds of rock? Sirius XM has it, Phoenix radio doesn't. Want to listen to practically any major sporting event? Sirius XM will have it, whereas Phoenix radio probably won't have it and if they do, it'll probably be on a crummy AM signal.
So my synopsis? HD radio is a joke and if you really want variety and selection, you can turn to Sirius XM. Yes, it sucks that you have to pay, but most people already pay for cable TV because the selection from normal broadcast channels is limited. It's practically the same thing with satellite radio. The NAB and Ibiquity may be jamming HD radio down our throats, but that doesn't mean it's good. And while I'm at it, what's the deal with AM HD? Honestly, who here listens to AM HD radio? You think the selection of FM HD radios is bad, good luck finding an AM HD radio. As of a few months ago, there's wasn't a single portable AM HD radio available. Not to mention, AM HD wreaks havoc on side channels and has contributed to the degradation of the KDUS signal at night thanks to our friends at CBS and KNX 1070. If anything, the people on here who work for Sandusky should be opposed to HD radio because it's one of the major contributing factors to why people can't listen to KDUS at night here in Phoenix. Thank you HD radio! :
