Dullest radio article ever by a local newspaper

Not sure what kind of hard hitting articles you are looking for. I think Virgin does a pretty good job reporting on a fairly boring (most of the time) radio market. This was one of the more interesting articles he's done for a while, especially if you were the average "reading the paper over your morning corn flakes" type of a reader, you got a basic primer on the AAA format.
Perhaps you ought to subscribe to R&R if you really feel the need for stimulating, in depth industry news...lol...Cuz the local paper ain't the place...I am glad the market even has a print report that covers the broadcasting beat...This is NOT a major radio market.

You're absolutely right on your musings of Virgin's article.

I thought, for what the column is, this article was good.

But there are so many times when column inches are filled up with the Sunday morning public affair show press releases. Does anyone here really think that people set their alarms to hear Sunday morning public affairs programming?

What's worse, copying and pasting press releases for your column inches, or having an automated radio station?

We always talk here about terrestrial radio being boring and uninteresting. What does it tell the PI readership when the media link between the Seattle radio market and the general public puts out dial position listings and Sunday morning PA press releases as "the pulse" of Seattle radio? That's tantamount to Taco Time changing their promotion of their Baja Tacos and replacing it with "Steve, the new guy here, will be cleaning the toilets and the floors 15 minutes prior to closing time."

Why doesn't Virgin go beat the pavement and do other radio-related articles? Why does news have to be limited to PD or ownership changes? Talk to morning shows, marketing directors or something engineering related, such as debunking the belief that everyone living on Cougar Mountain is going to die from the RF.

I can understand the context of Virgin's reporting, but even at that level, it really seems like he mails it in more often than doing a decent article like the one from this week.

I agree with you AQH. Virgin needs to hit the ground and provide his readers with more interesting articles. Reach out and ask the tough questions and then print them. For example, ask KBSG's new PD why the station continues to throw in 80's songs when it seems the market is saturated with 80's music between KJR, Jack, and Star. Ask Lazlo over at the End how Entercom feels about him firing an afternoon jock and replaced him with a 3 person team costing the company probably 3 to 4 times more money, yet the ratings for that daypart remains flat. Reach out to out of work jocks (Mike West, Robyn and Maynard, Andy Savage etc.) to see what they are up to and whether they have any hopes of returning to radio in Seattle.

So many possibilities for interesting stories Bill. I'm sure your readers would like to see you pursue them and future stories affecting their favorite stations.

I definitely would like to see that question asked and answered.

This June 14th article by Virgin also has a SOUNDOFF follow-up page
that has items on it regarding former KMTT's Mike West:

I've noticed some (if not all) of his weekly beatings - HAVE a 'P-I soundoff' follow-up page

Hell, even the comments on the SoundOff are tepid. Except for the guy who won't listen to KMTT because of "World Class Rock" but won't get hooked up to satellite until the Mountain goes away. Huh?

I know it's a figure of speech, but you DO know Bill Virgin is in a wheelchair, don't you? If I remember correctly, he has MS. I'm glad for the guy that he can do what he does.

You truncated my paragraph in that quote. Why can't Virgin do those things I suggested from a wheelchair or with MS?
