Durham's AM 1410 Urban Heritage Has Ended

WRJD-AM 1410 from Durham, NC has switched to a Spanish Christian station. AM 1410 has been a black-targeted station for over 57 years. It has a strong history as WSRC, which aired a mixture of R&B, Gospel and NBN segments. In the 90's, it switched to a black gospel format and the call letters were eventually changed to WRJD with the slogan "Rejoice 1410." The "Rejoice 1410" black-gospel format ended on December 26th.

It's now imaging as "Poder 1410 AM", and the announcers started Monday. There's a webcam studio link below.

WSRC signed on October 15, 1954, the same day Hurricane Hazel struck the area. The storm put WSRC off the air, but it was soon back up as a pioneer in urban radio. In 1965, the station added WSRC-FM 107.1, which would eventually become today's WFXC "Foxy 107/104". Durham artist Ernie Barnes, in his iconic work "Sugar Shack", included the WSRC call letters on a banner in the rafters of the depicted dance hall. "Sugar Shack" was prominently featured on 1970's CBS sitcom "Good Times", as well as on the cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" album (albeit with the WSRC calls modified on the album to read "WMPG"). Just last year, WRJD was a first runner up for Stellar Award for "Medium Market Station of the Year", and briefly expanded to a two-state simulcast on Spartanburg, South Carolina, sister station WOLI, 910 AM last spring.

Sorry to see this, brings a bit of hope when urban legends like WDAS-AM can also occasionally come back.
