DVD burner not working under vista

Help.I have a problem with my Dell inspiron 630 desktop NOT recognizing the dvdrom burner.I tryed rerunning the drivers and I get an error saying"This operation requires interactive window station"What in the hell is that.It does not let me install the updated drivers. All the security crap is shut off.I spend 5 hour doing everything I found online to try to get it up and running but nothing worked.I wonder if its the dvd rom is shot which I dont understand why because I never used it much.
No driver anywhere for this LG HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H73N ATA drive.I'm afraid to buy a new drive and have
"This operation requires interactive window station" sheeit popup again.Windows Vista is a piece of sheeit. To much security crap in it.

I'm thinking for whatever reason your burner isn't compatible.

I'm not familiar with Vista, as we've never embraced it where I'm at.
(Still on XP and Win 7)

Was this a Vista Upgrade from XP, or a clean Vista install? Are you logged in as Administrator, instead of as a user who is in the Admnistrator Group? Administrator is not typically an interactive user in Windows Vista.

Overall, it sounds like a driver problem. I have Vista running on an 830 with a DVD burner, and the burner is working without problems.

The Dell came with the drive also preloaded with Vista.Current Windows Vista upgrades.Did not add new DVD software.Have Roxio burning software installed.Nothing was changed. The drive runs fine in the dos mode when bootup from windows dvd.did test with the dell software and it pass with no problems. The drive was running fine but i have no idea when it quit working.Whet I reinstall the drive drivers it stops in the middle of the installation with this "This operation requires interactive window station" crap and it wont get updated.I'm logged in under Administrator plus I tried the driver install in the safe mode and it did not go through.I got to much money tied up with the software in the computer to wipe the drive and reinstall vista.I probably live using a external dvd drive since I really never burn CD,DVD anymore.

Create another account with Administrator privileges and log in under that account. As I said before, the Administrator account is not designed to run as an account that interacts with the desktop. Yes, this was new under Vista, and there are good reasons for it from a security standpoint.

Retry your driver update under the new account. Running under the "Administrator" account is simply not an option in either Vista or Windows 7 as normally configured.

Ok After a day of preaking.I found why the dvd rom dropped out of sight. As I was studying the regedit list.HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/SYSTEM/controlset03/cdrom Imagepath REG EXPANDSZ system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys.Ok after reading this string.I fired up window explorer and go into widows/system32/drivers and searched for cdrom.sys file.looked and looked and it was missing in action. So I copied the file from my windows recovery folder in the win backup partition on the drive and reinstall the dvd drive drivers and the DVD appearred in Win explorer.Lets see if it will behave,Thanks for the tips guys.
