Power pop was based on the garage bands of the 1960s. It was seen as too rock for pop, and too pop for rock.

He was a one-hit wonder twice, once with his self-named group, and once solo. And he hit #16 both times!

To put it in context, Dwight was one of many "power pop" artists in the late 70s and early 80s. Sort of a transition period, in rock. Other artists in the same sub-genre were Tommy Tutone, who had a huge hit with "Jenny (967-5309)" and the king of power pop: Elvis Costello.
