DX Alert 810 KGO San Francisco possibly heard in Newfoundland

Hello To All,

With good conditions here in the North Atlantic this evening, combined with secondary and third tier stations audible on a lot of frequencies.

On 810 with a mix of BBC Scotland, WGY in NY and CJVA in New Brunswick alternating off and on through the evening, also heard was a fourth signal floating up out of the mix for a short time which sounded like Newstalk 810 KGO in Frisco.

Will keep further watch and future post if anything there.

Good DX

Allen Willie
Bristol's Hope, Newfoundland

Considering that KGO doesn't throw much juice to the east, that would be an impressive catch indeed!

Polar path?

Count me in as getting WGY. That makes my Blowtorch total now 29.

WGY AM 810 Schenectady, NY (50,000 watts) (new as of 11/29/2012)

TOTAL: 29

When fully nulling WGY, I have Jaguars vs. Kangaroos basketball - I assume from WHB. I've had KGO here during sunrise, but it's rare! Allen, I hope you're able to pull out an ID, that would be an incredible catch from Newfoundland!

It would have to be over-the-pole, but even so, that would be incredible!

Not exactly over the poles, but the signal path would travel through Canada north of Lake Superior. This direction is still pretty much in KGO's null.... less than 3000 watts toward Bristol Hope, NF. Distance is 3455 miles. Quite unlikely, but you never know....

It's very possible. Many of the lower power US stations using DA's to the north get into Scandinavia and other countries in Northern Europe.

Strange as it may seem, there's probably a better chance of hearing San Francisco stations in Newfoundland than in the eastern part of the US because they are much more distant from the stations on the same frequencies that prevent us here in the US east from hearing what's behind them.

But what would make KGO special is that they are on 810, a frequency common to both the Americas *and* the rest of the world. There are Euros/Asians/Africans/Australians on 810.

I was thinking---KCBS 740 has a similar night pattern....but, NL has a 740 as well as Toronto with Zoomer's nonDA.

I stand to be corrected, but I think KTRH would be really tough in Newfoundland....much tougher than KCBS...because I think most of the nighttime signal goes south and southwest.

In Northern IL, I can't get that. 810 is usually the sister station (or simulcast, unsure) of 640 WMFN "La Poderosa." That's obviously a regional Mexican station. 640 can be heard for miles during the day. From before sunset to just after sunrise, you have to tune to 810 to listen to that kind of music. In the car, I get WMFN during the day and 810 at night pretty well. At night, it's jumble and interfered with by WSM next door on 650. Sometimes, I hear jumble of a New York station (obviously talk format).

Actually, it is Schenectady, NY, not Albany.
