Why would anyone want to run a pirate station on shortwave? It will have very few listeners. Internet stations also cover the entire country, and don't fade out like shortwave. Anyone can start an Internet "pirate" station for nothing.
You must not have ever built any radios (or transmitters), Nick.
I ran a SW pirate in 1991, and did so while there were more listeners.
I certainly wouldn't run the risk now, and while there are fewer listeners, there are more open frequencies.
But why radio, and not internet?
Because that's no different than what could have been done 90 years ago over phone lines.
Whether your wire is copper or glass fiber makes no difference.
Is is sound distribution, but has none of the allure and romance of radio, or the magic of ionospheric propogation.
It might as well be off your own ipod, as the result gives little or no hint of its journey.
It certainly is not of any use beside the campfire when hiking, or other "diconnected" occaisions.
Do not suggest 100% 3G coverage and cellular distribution is any kind of real "radio" either.
My pt 15 AM reaches many ears due to extreme pop density and the bandwidth is free as breathing air.
Tell me why I'd want to pay a monthly fee for bandwidth.
Feel free to suggest ways in which I can put a stream up for free and not have to pay for listener loading, or worry about
"other" issues, and I'll start to see it as being as useful as radio, but still without the allure of direct wireless.
