DX and Reception/BORING

I missed something.
What does being a small Newfoundland city with more AM stations than a larger city have to do with the citizens' partying capacity?

Sidebar misguided attempt at levity in light of the BORING nature of this board. Sorry.

My point was simply that the (few) Newfies I've met seem to have discovered alternate ways to entertain themsevles....despite the great DX opportunities right under their noses. These girls absolutely would not accept the notion that DX was better than beer. ;D

Actually they can both be satisfying. On my recent trip to Hawaii I found DX & beer were a great combination :D

When was the last time you picked up WLS & WBBM in Puerto Rico?
I know it was alot easier to hear those stations in the caribbean in the 60s & 70s when there was a whole lot less interference. I had no luck in 2004, but that was my most recent try.
I've heard some great stories from people who have DXed Europe from Cape Cod and Newfoundland. I guess if you have the right location and the right radio you can really hear some good stuff.

IIRC, it was in 2004. I've been there a few time since then, with no luck on the Chicago stations. It was a one-off deal, I guess.

As for Cape Cod, yes with the right equipment and spot it would be a good place to try for Europe. Unfortunately for me, my buddy's place on the cape is in Falmouth which is less than ideal for trans-Atlantic dxing. Great for picking up New York well, night and day! For trans Atlantic dx, you'd really need to be on the outer Cape - preferably facing the open ocean. Nantucket is another great spot from which to try and pick up Europe, as well as northwest Africa or northern South America.

Maine and NH's seacoast areas are not so good for European dx because it's not a straight salt water path from there....Nova Scotia lies between you and Europe. Marconi built his transmitter on the outer Cape for a good reason!

As an aside, yes beer and dx DO go together great! Add a fine cigar in there and you're really talking. It's anything but boring. :D

You must have been at the right spot at the right time to get WBBM & WLS in Puerto Rico in 04.
Everytime I've tried from southern Florida to southern Mexico I get so many station it's impossible for me to pull them out.
Years ago in the 60s & 70s WLS came in very well into Acapulco everynight when I was there.

I'll have to try lighting up a good cigar next time--thanks for the idea :D

I guess I also had my BORING THREAD hat on and missed the levity that first time. :)

I did not know DXing mixed so well with so many other pursuits. I guess others also did not know those things mixed so well, or it wouldn't be "boring." ;)

In an era where the only thing one can hear on the AM band is Klee Irwin whining about how the size of his bowel movements pale in comparison to his 3 year old daughter's, I tend to agree with the OP. ;D

LOL ;D

I have noticed DXing is better at night, too! [I wonder why that is....]
I think that's only true to distract us from the night things that could get us all in trouble to the good things, like DXing. ;)

The real reason for DXing isn't the subject matter on the station but the fact you can get the station from a distance.

If I'm able to get an AM station from California, for example, I don't care if they're talking about bowel movements. ;D

That also depends where you live.

If you're near salt water, it's hardly boring in the day.

That's one thing I've never had the chance to do is AM daytime DX from a spot on the coast.
I've heard the stories from people in the outer banks of NC who can pick up NYC & Boston during the day. I would love to try that sometime.

Last time I was on the Outer Banks of NC I heard WCBS 880 at anytime with a GE Superadio II, and before that, on the outer banks, the Long Island's WALK-, FM 97.5 with a GE Superadio III that delivered only adequate performance on FM, during a tropo.

The best I ever did mid day was hearing KNBR, KCBS, & KGO San Francisco from the beach just north of San Diego.

I've heard the reports here too about the outer banks reception of the New York stations and I know someone who lives in New Bern that had originally lived in the New York area. He said the way the New York AM stations come in during the day just a short drive to the outer banks is almost like being back home again.

When I was growing up in New Jersey, I remember how WBZ from Boston would come in pretty good down at the shore on Long Beach Island.

Here in Tampa, I can get a faint signal of WWL New Orleans during the day that's dominated by the spill over from the local adjacent station on 860, however right along the Gulf, WWL has a much better signal.

There have even been reports by someone of picking up the NYC stations during the day on the barrier islands along the east coast of Florida.

I've heard from some that on the outer banks not only can you get NYC in the daytime, but Miami as well.
So there you have it the entire east coast in one spot during the day.

That was me! Absolutely confirmed. Reliable daytime reception of WCBS and other NYC stations in Daytona Beach Shores, FL. Receiver, GE SR-2 - internal ferrite bar antenna only. Reception was in early 1990's.

When I get the time, I'm hoping to take a trip across the state to see what I can get, probably around Melbourne or there abouts. You think reception would also be possible on a Sony Walkman or car radio? My best catches have been on my little Walkman, such as KOA (pretty much a regular here at night) and KFI. During the day, it can pick up WWL and I'm about 15 miles inland from the Gulf. I can't wait to get over to the east coast! Last time I was there was Miami Beach over 20 years ago and one thing I noticed was how the New York stations were MUCH stronger at night than they are here in Tampa. As I mentioned once before, I made a lame attempt to hear something during the day but it was inside the hotel and there was static too. At the time, I just assumed it wouldn't have been possible anyway.
