DX from Australia

I haven't commented much recently, but for those interested in DX from the other side of the world, thought I would check in with some interesting things I've heard in the last month or 2. I'm still amazed at what you can hear with a less-crowded band and a water path. I'm now up to 12 countries ID'd since I arrived in mid-January.

540 Indonesia, RRI Bandung, 11/1 1455 finally Id'd this after many tries. Music up to top of hour, clear ID into news program. This is regularly on top of Longreach ABC but always fades at the wrong time!
909 Botswana, VOA Relay, 9/17 1937 presumed, w/American history lesson in very slow American EE, on top of frequency (600 KW, 5,500 miles west of here)
918 UnID, 11/1, 1345 Asian stringed music in null of 6NA Radio West Narrogin. Probably Cambodia, but didn't ID.
1233 Phillipines, Bacelod City DYVS (FEBC), 10/22 1330, w/religious program in English, DYVS FEBC ID then back to preaching. (10 kw, 2,950 miles North of here)
1386 New Zealand, Radio Tarana, 10/29 1358 w/Indian music, announcement and ID in English, news at top of hour. Amazingly, my first Kiwi since moving here. (10 kw, 3,300 miles east of here)
1476 UnID, 9/17, 1910 w/Arabic (or Farsi, can't tell) talk, bearing northwest. Very fadey, gone after 2000. There's an Egyptian and an Iranian on this frequency, but haven't heard it since.
1503 UnID, I regularly hear Chinese talk here around 1400, but can't ID. WRTH lists RTI Taiwan here, but RTI website doesn't list this frequency.
1530 Sao Tome, 9/17 1910, likely the VOA relay , with news in French, bearing E-W. Schedule shows FF programming at this time. (600 kw, 7,300 miles west)
1539 UAE, Al Dhabbaya, Radio Aap Ki Dunyaa (VOA) 11/4 1500, very strong w/discussion in Urdu? matching webstream. Previously have heard this w/VOA news in English. (600 kw, 5,600 miles NW)
1575 UAE, Al Dhabbaya, Radio Farda, 11/4 1603, likely the one with news in Arabic w/Obama mentions. This is underneath the usual VOA from Thailand. (600 kw, 5,600 miles NW)

I'm using a Sony ICF-SW7600GR, mostly barefoot, though have been experimenting around with a Tecsun AD-200 passive loop in the past week.

Mario, I'm in Perth, on the west coast of Australia.

Thanks for the report! Just a heads up (for your log book, if you keep one), Radio Farda broadcasts in Farsi, not Arabic.

Have you bagged any Europeans, yet? Your best bet is the 600 kW TWR/RMC transmitter, located at Cap Greco Cyprus, on 1233 kHz. I've picked this up, on an Australian Global Tuners node, further up the coast from you. While listening in, the 10 kW Filipino FEBC broadcaster, DYVS, came in underneath...! Some great things to snag out your way, keep us updated!

Thanks for the correction Tincap, you're right it's Farsi. I haven't heard Europe yet. My schedule makes it hard to be listening at the right time, early morning. One of the rare times I was up at 3am, I heard Sao Tome and Botswana, so Cyprus should certainly be doable from here.

Do you all have other ideas on other stations that I should try, in Europe/Africa?

I'm surprised that Saudi Arabia on 1521 isn't available. Even though the towers are on the shore of the Red Sea, 2 million watts should be enough to get across the Indian Ocean to the west coast of Australia. But I saw in a previous thread that you thought you were in their null zone.

Jim, for Europe/Africa, this one is very handy ~> http://www.emwg.info/ It covers entire MW (and LW) band for Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

For Asia, this one seems to be a really good resource ~> http://www.asiawaves.net/mediumwave-531.htm It covers the entire MW (and LW) band for Asia. I remember printing this off, before my Hong Kong trip in '05 and found it to be waaaay to heavy to pack in the luggage. Wish I had a lap top back then....!

Great little radio that Sony! I've used it barefoot to hear the 1314 in Norway, 1134 in Croatia, and a few other 'split' frequencies...(Northern Illinois)

How does the MW receiver compare to the Grundig G5?

Tincap, thanks for the tip on emwg, that will be really helpful. I'm already using asiawaves, a great resource.

The hard part is knowing which stations to try for. I've joined the Australian DX Club and have gotten some tips there, and get some good ideas from you guys (will be looking for Cyprus and Oman).

If you are on the Eastern coast (Queensland, NSW, etc), I know KBLA and KMIK make it very often.

There is someone, I think it was "DXer2000" who used to post here, that lives in Australia and received lots of North American MW DX as far east as Chicago. I believe he's located near Canberra.
