DX HDTV Saturday night

Not an expert on DX HD either by any means, but I've been experimenting with a Samsung HDTV tuner... had some decent tropo to the north again tonight, so I hooked up the tuner, pointed my antenna north and here's what I could get in HD
from my home just northeast of Richmond, VA

WRC-DT Washington (90 miles)
WTTG-DT Washington
WUSA-DT Washington
WMAR-DT Baltimore (122 miles)
WJZ-DT Baltimore
WNUV-DT Baltimore

Very cool to see these tropo catches in total clarity without the typical artifacts associated with tropo...
Interesting observations
1. I could not receive WNUV's analog signal at ALL on my TV's tuner (analog ch54); in fact I never have received WNUV before. Yet the digital signal came in fine (I wonder if their digital signal is stronger?)
2. When the tuner scanned for stations (with the antenna to the north) it could NOT find local NBC12 (WWBT-DT Richmond, 9 miles). I could not receive WWBT-DT without reorienting my antenna toward the WWBT tower.
3. I was receiving about 5-6 other stations from Balt./Wash. on analog that I thought would be strong enough for HD reception, but the HD tuner couldn't pick 'em up.

Also, in the midst of the digital frenzy, I had a decent new analog catch tonight: WGCB-TV49, Red Lion, PA (162 miles)

I suspect both of these are for the same reason.

WWBT-DT is on channel 54. It was clobbering WNUV-analog; at the same time, WNUV-analog was creating enough co-channel interference to WWBT-DT to make it impossible to decode.

I don't see anything obvious that would preclude reception of most of their DTs, but you never know... Three that would have problems would be WDCA (analog 20/DTV 35, clobbered by WRLH); WMPB (analog 67/DTV 29, clobbered by WVIR); and WUTB. (analog 24/DTV 41, clobbered by WHTJ)

Hey w9...
Thanks for the great post. Regarding this:
> WWBT-DT is on channel 54. It was clobbering WNUV-analog;

So, am I understanding you correctly that, on an analog receiver, a DT broadcast can block an analog broadcast, even though the DT broadcast cannot be decoded by the analog receiver? This certainly makes sense, just never occurred to my simple brain before (!) And it would explain why I've never seen WNUV-analog, when it's sister WBFF-45 Baltimore has been a tropo staple this summer. I guess I really need to chart my local DTV allocations (like you did!) and avoid trying to analog DX on those channels, since they are blocked.

Thanks also for you explanations of why some of the analogs were not coming HD; they all seem to make sense. I was wondering about WDCA and WUTB, which were coming in really well on analog. One more I looked up this morning:
WCPB Salisbury (analog 28 DTV-56) blocked by WNVC-56 Fairfax

Again great post, and thanks!

Yep. As far as the analog receiver is concerned the DTV broadcast is essentially a bunch of noise.
