I just experienced a rare (for me) DX opportunity in Northern California. Perhaps some of the DX experts here can tell me whether it was tropo or e-skip.
I'm in El Dorado Hills, about 30 miles east of Sacramento. I listened to KKLD in Cottonwood, AZ (about 860 miles away, according to Mapquest).
And I also received KOOL in Phoenix (about 780 miles).
I initially thought this was e-skip due to the distance. However, in reading about tropo, I understand it takes place during inversion layers, which I assume is what's happening now due to the cloudless sky and presumably stable atmosphere.
I've experienced DX conditions in other areas of the country where I've lived, such as in Florida. But this is the first long-distance DX I can recall in Northern California, which I thought was always due to the normally stable atmosphere we have here.
So what do the experts here think is happening?
