DX not as fun as it used to be in Philly area

All of these translators made DXing not as good as it used to be.
I know it doesn't matter to most folks, but maybe I'm not the only one that likes this stuff in this area.
Used to be able to get in the summer at night.
99.9 WWFG (Ocean City, MD)
Mix 107.3 WRQX/Wasington, And Mix 106-5 WWMX/Baltimore
94.9 WVPE (Virginia Beach, VA
I've gotten the Outer Banks of NC, 99.something? forget now.
Every once in a while DX favors going north and I can get 98.5 WKRZ (or used to be able to. Now with Uptown 98.5 I'm thinking I won't get that anymore?)

Now so many translators and LP-FM stations exist that DXing is a lot less accessible here.
Has anyone moved to an area that is further away from the city just so they could get good DX?
Yes you can stream anything but its just cool to hear the local AM/FM for DX I think.
Its cool to think that your tuner late at night can pull stations from far far away with an antenna. I used to check when it'd get dark or a few hours after.
And I love radio tuners too!

106.5 is an LP-FM now and I dunno if it'd interfear with WWMX possibility or not.
I know WRQX is no more, which is sad.
So who else DX or has an antenna on their roof with roter other than me?
Anyone else enjoy this stuff as listeners?

It's up for discussion as to which is the cruellest modern species of leisure obstacles, JH : Translator inundation, AM noise or bad radio.

You seem to be an FM fellow ; I'm essentially an AM-only guy (when I detect some trope on the car radio, though, I'll spend a lot of time on the FM dial : -) -- a LOT more time listening than I normally would.

The AM dial up this way (and in many other places) is such a swarm of QRM that the AM section even off the re=fitted HQ-180 I bought a few years ago can't haul in anything but a few locals and semi-locals. All the HQ-180 pulls in is louder noise. The DX 'den' here is in a boro of 4000 people. By comparison, AM DX in the PHL area must be as rewarding as fishing in some desert.

Those QRM conditions may vary a random listener's mileage as far as 'entertaining' radio is concerned. But that's also a problem for DXers. Programming on the AM dial is worse than that on FM.

I'm a little lost, QRM is what? and the HQ-180 is a tuner?
AM is so bad here that the only way for me to be able to get anything will be for me to put up an external antenna on my roof.
I want to do this someday. I have a Carver TX-11B tuner coming and i know WBCB plays music at times (but forget about that here in Bensalem.) I'd love to get 740 Oldies out of Teronto at night also.
I just got a Super Radio III and again forget about it. The only thing I can get to pull in (even outside of my house) is WPHT but even that has some noise in the background. KYW is a tun of static as is anything else.
I've already tried the CCrane Twin Coil Ferrite® and no dice.
I have noticed though that if the power goes out AM comes in great! I also know there is electric lines running just above my driveway so I'd think the antenna when outside needs to clear that and clear the trees, too.
I finally got to have the SonySRF-42 and SRF-A100 some while back here in fact still have them got 'em from eBay.
I demand good quality AM.
the EpPro from CCraine and CC Radio 2E are better than most for reception but even that has a tun of noise but the high quality wide-band AM isn't in those radios either.
I like to record airchecks and am interested in what I can get and also in music formats on AM.
WBCB streams but has a hum in their web stream but I just want to hear it on AM anyway.

@ JH : The Hammarlund HQ-180 is a beastly boat-anchor AM-Short Wave radio that goes back maybe 70 years. They were designed for military use and were expected to be 'right there' under any extreme of weather cx.

Ooops, lol. "cx' is abbreviative ham/DX for 'conditions. I apologize for the DX lingo! Generally, 'QRN' is natural atmospheric noise, while 'QRM' is man-made noise. I was under the impression that you were more a listener for music and entertainment than you were a hopeless DX=only addict, but I wasn't sure.

That's quite the collection of radios you have there!

My wife grew up around the turn from WBCB's tower. She says they used to get WBCB on the telephone all of the time,

Forget about it. Fortunately I have a place near Atlantic City that’s a great spot for tropo. Close to the shore and all but 2 frequencies can be nulled out
