DX report for Charger's ROCK 105.3

I'm located in the east county and thought I'd give rock 105.3 a listen and see how their Charger broadcast fares.. I do not listen to football on the radio.. It just doesn't work for me.. Not like baseball..But what the heck!
I actually got into it, even though Ted Leitner was'nt calling the game.

But at a skosh past 8PM, the signal strength started to fade noticeably. It actually sounded like skywave bouncing off the ionosphere. I missed several
key moments in the game and finally at 9pm, I turned it off.. It was that bad.

although I haven't checked the sked, i'll assume there will be at least another night game.. Hopefully, it's a sell out if it's local. ROCK 105.3 don't work at night!
______________

What part of East County?

Of course, I'm not surprised....CC has no concept of the radio business at all. For them it is a matter of probably a slurry requisitions for the particular frequency to carry the game...who gives a damn whether anyone can hear it.

yep the reception is bad in east county padres and charger broadcasts really have reception problems surprised their advertisers have not complained

Perhaps I should narrow it by saying they have no concept of how to make good radio. Every year they try a new bag of tricks until the pixie dust of those tricks runs out.

Last year the big thing was AAR (Air America Radio) and that has kind of been fizzling. This year it is "La Precisosa."

All they are is a big machine that has been created to make money for their stockholders by regurgitating the same old stuff a million times.

I'm in Granite Hills and have great reception all the time.

FM signals do not vary by day or by night. In fact, the only thing occasionally affecting SoCal FMs is inversion, which is usually prefalent on a north - south axis, not an east-west one, and is, in any case, an atmospeheric conditon over which the staitons affected have no control.

Except for rare occasions, such as e-skip or tropos, etc.,, FMs do not skip and do not have skywave that is reflected back to earth.

They definitely know how to do good radio. Otherwise they would not have the ratings that they have.

Not really. There are getting far better 25-54's on the AA stations than what they had before. They have only flipped one of them, the near-daytime AM in Charleston, SC.

La Preciosa is over 2 years old, and is #1 or #2 in every market it is in.

That sort of success sure sounds like someone who does know what they are doing. Right...

They are also the people who reinvented AM radio, and who have caused the whole industry to cut spot loads. They are good broadcasters, and eventually get it right even when they take a wrong step with one or another station.
Edited by David Eduardo on 09/05/05 12:57 AM.

Actually that is what they do worst or all: Clear Channel absorbed Jacor, AM-FM, a billboard company and a concert promotion company, all in a short period of time. When the last of the big mergers were completed they had a market cap of about $60 billion. Today they have a market cap of less than $18 billion and, although stocks as a whole have not done well the last few years, Clear Channel underperforms the Dow and S&P the last few years: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=CCU&t=2y&l=on&z=m&q=l&c=^GSPC,^DJI

And take a look at their share price in the last five years as it has had pretty much steady drop from almost $65 to low 30's. Talk about fading out: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=CCU&t=5y&l=off&z=l&q=l&c=

So, no matter how much you may hate listening to Clear Channel, be thankful you did not invest in them :)

At some point they are going to have to do "something" to "poomp themselves ooop." I've been reading on other boards that they are dumping AAR on some stations back east.

They are dropping AA on one station, the old WPAL in Charleston, SC, which is directional day and below 200 watts at night. I do not think this station represents more than a few hundred thousand in potential billings even maxed out. It is not in a very big market.

CCU has revenues of $9.3 billion in the last year. One AM in what is not even a top 50 market won't change that.

What will is the plan to spin off the entertainment divsion, which they kind of admit was a bad idea. They also plan to buy back a large number of shares, which will decrease the P:E ratio and in crease the equity per share.

CCU actually has a pretty low debt to equity ratio, about in the range of companies like GE, etc. What they need to do is weather the current disfavor of all media companies (from cable to TV and radio) and wait for value investing to recognize media as a consistent cash flow industry.

Most of the share price issues have to do with the sector, not with CCU. I can name a dozen companies whose shares are off by as much or more than CCU, all of which are in broadcasting.
