DX Road Trip #2- Jonesville, MI

Jonesville, Michigan has to be one of the best DX locations in southern Michigan. It is relatively far away from most major regional city centers and in addition, has some of the highest elevation in the region. The city itself sits in a valley and is just shy of 1100' above sea level, the land around town is a good 75-100 feet higher. Here is a look at the distance to the major city centers.

Kalamazoo, MI- 52 miles
Lansing, MI- 53 miles
Toledo, OH- 61 miles
Fort Wayne, IN- 65 miles
South Bend, IN- 81 miles
Grand Rapids, MI- 85 miles
Detroit, MI- 86 miles
Chicago, IL- 152 miles
Cleveland, OH- 156 miles
Columbus, OH- 163 miles
Indianapolis, IN- 170 miles

In addition, Jonesville's only local radio stations are three class A's licensed to Hillsdale, Hudson and Pittsford, MI. There are no translators or LPFM's nearby.
91.1- WPCJ- Pittsford, MI- .27kw- 56 meters- 11 miles
92.1- WCSR- Hillsdale, MI- 6kw- 74 meters- 3 miles
102.5- WBZV- Hudson, MI- 6kw- 100 meters- 9 miles

There is only one class B signal within a 20 mile radius. That being WNWN (98.5) from my hometown of Coldwater, but 18 miles away from Jonesville. The next closest are just a hair over 30 miles away. The rest are mostly located in the major cities listed above, so as you can see, this IS a good DX spot.

Here is a look at what I confirmed on my Mazda6 car stereo..

88.7- WICR- Indianapolis, IN- Public Radio- Jazz program- 163 miles
95.7- WAOR- Nappanee, IN- Classic Rock- 'on 95-7 WAOR'- 80 miles
99.5- WZPL- Greenfield, IN- Hot AC- 'ZPL'- 167 miles
100.5- WWKI- Kokomo, IN- Country- 'Your KI weather'- 126 miles
101.5- WNSN- South Bend, IN- AC- Sunny 101.5- 83 miles
103.7- WFIU- Bloomington, IN- Public Radio- NPR- 217 miles- breadwinner of the day!

And one just north of town on the way back home..
89.9- WKDS- Kalamazoo, MI- High School- Heard with crap rap song- 140 watts- 49 miles

ahh, Jonesville, the one and only major suburb of Hillsdale.

As a former Hillsdale resident I concur, the area is great for DXing.
You are at least 35 miles from everything, the terrain is relatively flat,
and if you choose to run a ground the water table is very high (the
mosquitoes there can be pretty damned annoying frankly)
