DX Season Beginning on Arctic SDR

The "usual suspects" from North America have been turning up this week on the Arctic SDR in Norway. WBBR, WFED, and even WBZ to name a few.

Tuesday night at around 9:30CST (0330 UTC) produced an interesting "two-fer" for me on 1280. WWTC from Minneapolis and CFMB from Montreal. Each one first time for me on that receiver, but not exactly huge surprises.

Happy hunting!

That's good to know. I wasn't having any luck on the Arctic receiver through last week. I'll start trying again.

The few times I tuned the past week conditions to North America between 0000 - 0400 UTC were very poor. Stations from Middle East were dominating the dial. Did hear a new Canadian though 4 days ago, CJYQ st. John.

That's the same situation I encountered. Almost nothing from North America.

I'd have to say it was pretty similar for me, but they weren't as bad as a couple of weeks previous. I thought perhaps we were starting to see the beginning of a breakthrough, as evidenced by the two catches on 1280. I did hear plenty from the middle east and a few Canadians. Most notably, in addition to CFMB was CBI (1140) 10kw from Nova Scotia. I did hear that one a couple of times last winter.

Fairly good opening to North America this evening. Spent couple hours tuning around and heard for the first time on this receiver CFGO Ottawa, ON (1200) and WNAM Neenah, WI (1280). Others noted were WJR (760), CFRY (920), WHO (1040), KFAB (1110), KMOX (1120), WBBR (1130), WWTC (1280), CJVB (1470), KXEL (1540)

I'll have to get back on it. Seems to me it was around mid November last year when it began to open up.

i was on at about the same time as you and heard some of those, but not all of them. I've been looking for CFGO, but without success. I've also been checking 1470 to see if WMBD could possibly make the hop. So far no. At least not for me. I'll keep trying for both....especially since you've now discovered that CFGO is doable.

But I did snag one new one. KCNZ on 1650. Weak, but alone and clearly audible with Sunday night football and positive ID. KCNZ is basically in the same market as KXEL, but the signal on the SDR was at least as good as KXEL, if not better. I don't think KCNZ is known for running 10kw day power at night, but I couldn't help but wonder. WWTC had a steady signal on 1280, as you probably also were aware, but I didn't hear WNAM or CFMB this time around. At least not that I could identify. I've heard WNAM multiple times in the past, however. CFMB, so far for me, is a new one as of last week.

Cyberdad I noticed you were tuning around as well. WNAM conveniently faded up during ID time, something that rarely happens, and then just disappeared. CFMB was on with an unidentified foreign language for few minutes and I was able to match it to their stream. I did heard a football game on 1650 as well which was presumably KCNZ, but i did not stick around for an ID. Overall the reception of North American stations was much improved compared to a week ago.

I must be having bad luck because I was listening around 0600Z and most of what I heard was Europeans. I did hear a weak KOMO for a short time which quickly faded out.

Being lucky for me last week was managing to catch a CFMB ID in English. Similar to what you described with WNAM, they were only in for about a minute, then vanished.

I used to get into Montreal 2-3 times a year, but it's been nearly ten years since my last visit. My memory of it is being in French. But given that Montreal is a very diverse place, I'm not surprised that they're now broadcasting to minority segments of the community.

Very poor propagation to North America tonight. Newfoundland stations, I think 1200 Boston or Ottawa, and not much else. Albeit 500 watt BBC Essex on 765khz is weak but steady. Also BBC Radio Foyle on 792 from Londonderry, with just 1 kw. Also, Russia uses the regular AM band for a lot of their NDBs - the Moscow one, 'ER', on 794 is quite clear.

Conditions sound better in the Arctic. Some stations in at the moment (0650z 11/19/20)
CHQT 880 Edmonton, quite well with traffic updates. Global News Radio 880 Edmonton - another station is in with country, very likely CKLQ Brandon MB.
An UNID with Red Eye Radio is in on 970 - WDAY Fargo?
VERY loud 1000 KOMO.
CKST 1040 Vancouver w/ sports
CJNB 1050 SK w/ country
CJOB 680 Manitoba w/ Covid-19 discussion, Global News. No sign of KBRW
Coast to Coast on 1410...CFTE BC?
KRKO 1380 Everett WA w/ Kiss 'Rock and Roll All Night' mixed with Fox Sports, likely KLIZ Brainerd MN
KRRZ 1390 Minot ND // stream, Tom Petty 'Runnin' Down a Dream'
KRPI 1550 Blaine WA w/ Punjabi music
KKXA 1520 Snohomish WA, Classic Country
KKMO 1360 Tacoma, w/ promo mentioning Seattle in SS.

Definitely things looking up last night (Wed 11/18 around 10pm CSY/0400UTC). Strong KOMO mixing at times with Spain. WBBR also in. I'm sure I could've snagged a few more, but I was only on for a brief period.

Still no luck for me on the Arctic receiver. All I heard was 1089 Sports from the UK and that was weak. I went to the Hawaii receiver and conditions were good. All the West Coast powerhouses were there, KNBR, KFI, KNX. KSL was OK, WGN just above the noise level and KKOH with WBBM behind it. Pretty good stuff on my first run on the Kanehoe, Hi receiver for this season. More to come.

Pretty much the same thing for me this evening on the Arctic SDR. WCKY mixing with a European station and a very weak signal with football on 1300. I thought it might have been WOOD, but the stream didn't match, and I wasn't able to catch a positive ID before it faded. Oh well....at least Sports Talk 1089 was blasting.

Well I finally caught something from NA on the Arctic, KBRW 680 at 0600Z with a fair signal. Conditions not good. Most of the band was dead.
