DX tests coming up during the winter.

Just a notice that 4 local stations will be conducting DX tests this winter per ABDX (American Broadcast DXers). They are WOON/1240, WSAR/1480, WHTB/1400 & WARL/1320. WOON's will be the 1st of the winter DX season. It takes place next Sunday 12/21 between 2-3A.M.! That's SUNDAY morning, not Monday morning. The other 3 will be announced later. So if you want to hear WOON/1240 & are just a little too far away normally, you may be able to hear it cut through the QRM next Sunday!

How's this going to work Jay? Going to crank up the final or convince WHMQ to stay off the air? Sneak in a new antenna for the night, maybe? Any special programming? Is WOON normally on the air then or is that a time when other stations on that frequency are normally silent? What's the best DX report that the station's gotten in the past?

Usually a DX test means that the station will be broadcasting CW (morse code) and tones that can easily be heard through the dozens of other stations on crowded frequencies.

WOON is already at the limit for its frequency (1kW) so it won't be "firing up the finals." Also as far as I know, no other 1240 will be going off-air & most stations are 24 hours a day now anyway. I've never heard WHMQ but have nulled WOON enough with just my DX-402 to hear WWCO-Waterbury, Ct. a few years ago.

The test will consist of a WOON ID in Morse Code, an announcement that it is a test transmission, the ID again & finally a jingle. Those elements will be repeated from 2-3A.M. tomorrow. With all the snow we're getting, why not fire up an old tube set or a simple transistor radio tonight from 2-3:00?

As for record distance for WWON/WOON, I don't know what it is but if this helps: for people who have heard the last DX tests over a decade ago, WOON is on a new tower so it could count as a "new station" if you've heard it before. Back to the distance, a station in Wyoming on 1240 was heard from Canada-Maine during a DX test last year. Another 1240 in South Carolina was heard far away too.

I hope this answers your questions! Enjoy tonight's show (well it's really Sunday morning)!

I'll be listening for it here in Myrtle Beach, SC. Thanks for the heads-up! Merry Christmas!

I hope we hear how far it travels, results of the DX.......

The test for WOON has be rescheduled for this Sunday, January 18th from 2-3A.M. E.S.T./07:00-08:00Z. Recently I'm told WOON was heard in SWEDEN! So don't be shy because it's a 1kW class C!

73 & good DX!
