Tuesday July 11th was an interesting day here in the Hudson Valley. Semi-local WLJP-89.3 was off the air in the afternoon, and I noted regular WSKG-89.3 Binghamton, NY coming in well, and a weak fadey WPFW-89.3 from Washington, DC. When I aimed the antenna South, I got military music with no announcements from what must be WKDT-89.3 West Point (100 watts, 490 feet BELOW average terrain). It’s 27 miles from me, and less than 10 miles from WLJP!!, although there is very rough terrain between the two stations. WKDT is listed in Bruce Elving’s “FM Atlas”, but NOT on Radio-Locator, the FM station Spreadsheet on www.dxfm.com , or even in the FCC Database. It seems the West Point station is government authorized but not FCC licensed. I had heard them back in 1993, but had thought they were no longer on the air, so they are new to my post-May 2003 FM log.
While listening to WKDT, I added WRMB-89.3 Boynton Beach, FL with “Breakaway” afternoon show briefly overriding WKDT at 3:08pm.
Between 6 and 7pm the FM dial exploded with E-skip from the Minnesota area, resulting in 6 new logs.
6:09pm - KKRL-93.7 Carroll, IA with a local baseball game, including local spot for a place on route 141 in Manning, IA. 1078mi.
6:22pm - KNSG-94.7 Springfield, MN “The Dog FM” with local spots. Classic rock. 1094mi.
6:24pm - KDJS-95.3 Willmar, MN K-95.3 with country, local spot break. 1094mi.
6:28pm - KZPK-98.9 Paynesville, MN “Wild Country 99” mentions of St. Cloud. 1061mi.
6:32pm - WCMP-100.9 Pine City, MN spot for Dairy Queen in North Branch. 990mi.
6:48pm - KBOT-104.1 Pelican Rapids, MN “Wild 104.1” country, several local spots for Minnesota #30. 1144mi.
Lots of signals “got away” with rapid fading.. including a country station o/ semi-local WHUD-100.7. It would have been first skip logging on this frequency.
Hoping for some more DX today.
