DXing eastern NC stations in Jackson, MS

Greetings from the Magnolia State! This afternoon, I've been picking FMs out of eastern North Carolina quite clearly. I heard 94.1 and 94.3 Hot FM, 101.1 the Party and a station on 95.1 (they were airing a NASCAR race and a DJ broke into programming to announce a tornado warning). I heard these stations about two hours just after 4pm my time. This is the first time I've ever DXed North Carolina stations.

This explains all the Spanish speaking stations I heard yesterday driving from Myrtle Beach to Charlotte. One was on 92.3 and I thought WKRR had flipped to Spanish. I had listened to WKRR on my way down to Myrtle Beach in the same area.

what you guys are hearing is called sporatic E-skip.....its a regular occuring pheonomenom during the summer months...usually starting in may..peaking around july 4th and tapering off by late august...its when FM signals and low band TV signals get to the e layer of the atmosphere and hits a strong collection of ions and reflect back to earth....called ion "clouds"....anyway..

the reception usually occurs between TV channels 2-6 and all of FM...the skip usually starts at TV channel 2 and will make its way up...most of the time the skip dosen't make it to FM...but will reak havoc on those low band TV channels and low band FM (usually non-commercials)...

Times usually..midday when tropo starts to die down e-skip picks up...but sometimes lasting into the late evening

distances average between 500 and 1500 miles...

back when I was loggging...I have recieved several canadian stations..
states..
Winsconsin
Michigan
Oklahoma
Texas
Mississipi
Florida
Louisiana
vermont
alabama
arkansas
.....
Puerto rico (my most distant)
Countries....

mexico
and cuba

when I was 12 years old I watched oklahoma public TV for about 6 hours at some point being almost city-grade like.....I was able to watch puerto rico TV for about 3-4 hours...

you don't need a fancy radio or TV...some of my early grabs were with rabbit ears..later grabs were with a directional outside antenna...I would null the locals (WTKR.3.WUND.2.WSKY..4) to grab some nice catches...

the same thing on FM can happen as well..those bursts of city grade are just enough to make my RDS lock in and give me a station ID before it goes back into the static never to he heard again...

if you cannot get a ID..and they give a phone number..CALL....hehehehe...I had a nice converstation with a preacher from new orleans one time.......

I havent DX'ed since I've moved to greensboro...and now I live about 3 miles from WVBZ 100.3's tower..ALL my radio's are overloaded with RF..I can get all the local TV stations crystal clear with no antenna. :-[

In North Carolina, I've picked up stations from Texas on Channel 2 on several occasions.

I've experienced the same thing in Hurdle Mills, NC. It finally got so bad that Charter cable in Roxboro quit carrying WFMY.

Lets see I've picked up stations on the FM dial from Kansas and Maryland. I have a recording of the Maryland one. It was WKHI 99.9 from Ocean City, Maryland back in 1982 (July 25th to be exact as I look at the cassette tape it was recorded on). The Kansas one as I remember came in at a whopping 5 (strongest signal)on my signal strength meter on my receiver I had then (and still have and use) as did the Maryland one. This was with the cheapo antenna that came with it. It didn't last too long and I was unable to record it. I later heard that they had a real bad severe thunderstorm out there and I figured that that was why I was getting it. I think this was in the lae 80s when I got the Kansa station. The only other stations I've gotten from quite a distance was one in Dillon, SC and maybe Fayetteville, NC and a few in Norfolk, VA.

This morning between 8 and 9ish, FM stations were coming into northern Wake County from Charleston pretty strong and Myrtle Beach stations (Mix 97.7, Star 92.1) and 92.9 WEGX in Dillon 102.7 WGNI and Coast 97.3 from Wilmington were like locals. At 92.5 B92 was even completely overriding 92.5 the BBN station in Henderson, even showing the RDS, but when I moved the car, it was gone.

For a little while 93.7 Bob FM from Norfolk VA was coming in loud and clear. I've heard that one a few times in the past few months though.

In the Brier Creek area of southeastern Durham County, I listened to 102.7 GNI clearly up until 11 a.m. WMYB (Star 92.1) was just as clear also. These two in particular have been very reliable catches over the past few days here.
