Dxing from Puerto Rico

There's a talker on 1650 in Portsmouth VA (WHKT I think) and I believe they run Dennis Miller after midnight Eastern time (1am there?). They once were Radio Disney.

1680 in Winter Garden (Orlando) I believe is black Gospel. I do not have Radio-Locator.com handy here---not that it's always right!

1700 Spanish? Hmmm WJCC, my local in Miami Springs, is 100% Haitian/Creole. They *used* to be Spanish, but no more. Sure it was Espanol?

You have my permission to keep trying for KVNS :) I heard it under WJCC from Bermuda at night (KVNS was my only K there)

cd

I'm not sure it was Spanish, but I am positive it wasn't English

I'll try to check again before I leave here Sunday.

Even here in Tampa where KVNS usually dominates at night, there are times when KVNS is completely absent but only briefly.

Like cd suggests, KVNS should show up sooner or later if you are able to listen long enough.

I will try again before I go, but so far all I've heard on 1700 is not KVNS.
The reason I was listening to 1700 was to try to hear KVNS.

I was able to find a link to live audio for WJCC:

http://ice.stream101.com/start/jsaintsu/ (choose Real Player)

Their website is:

www.radiomega.net

Was listening at 10 am EST to the feed, and they ended a paid program with English disclaimer: "....the opinions expressed are not necessarily those of Radio Mega WJCC 1700 AM....." and also English TOH ID, if this helps at all.

Thanks I'll listen for it next time I check 1700. Problem is nothing is coming in strong on that frequency. Only thing I hear is not in English, but a weak signal at best.

I tried that, but only hearing Spanish on 1700. Could that be Miami? Getting Spanish language talker on 1680. Doesn't sound local, but strongest Ex-bander at night.
I heard English on 1650, but not strong enough to ID. Any idea where that may be coming from?

1680 may be WTTM in Lindenwold, NJ, Radio Unika, which is a combination of brokered and Spanish programming.

No source I have shows a US Spanish language station on 1700... Brownsville is supposedly oldies in English.

I've never been and I'm not offhand familiar with the local AM dial, but I'd expect you might hear a few Texans. And what about the Mexican blowtorches?

Mexico is a very difficult catch from PR... the distances to the big AMs is too great and East-West paths in the tropics are notoriously bad. With all the SE Mexican AMs now gone (or nearly all of them) there is nothing close. Even Cuba is not a reallyt easy catch, save for the highest powered ones.

Texas is similary difficult with most frequencies having higher powered Venezuelans and Colombians, as well as locals and Dominicans. PR has 72 AM stations, so its very hard to get anything to the West until some sign off (most are 24/7), as from San Juan you look down the Island towards the west.

Thanks David I knew you'd know. BTW what years did you DX from here? If the frequencies were more open then I'm sure you received alot more stateside than I am. I do know someone who was here in the 60s reported hearing WGBS regularly then at night. Obviously based on your report it's not likely to get Miami on that frequency now.

I was there most of the time from 1970 to 1992. Most of the time I used an R390, using loop antennas. Due to the urban environment, and my job, DX to the US was never plentiful. (for much of the time my job made it useful to live first near the WUNO site, and later very close to the WQII site). In any case, I was more interested in trans Atlantic and South American catches which were a lot more fun.

Not much. I seem to recall getting a weak one from Miami at one point, but can't recall which. The usual problem is that locals occupy the same frequencies as the stronger south FL AMs do.

All the years I was there, I found 1580 from Ft Lauderdale to consistently be the easiest catch, even with Manatí on the air. Their lobe is so narrow, it's like 150 kw towards PR.

Well then I don't know what I'm hearing on 1700, but there is a station on there in a language which I cannot understand. The music sounds "Latin/Caribbean". Underneath there is another station or two fighting it out. A few minutes past 10PM this evening local time here, 8PM+ CST, I heard about a minute of "Na Na Hey Hey" by Steam. I'm guessing that could've been KVNS.
You guys that hear it much more than I do can decide.

Tonight the best DX was coming from the midwest. WLW was very strong with Cincinnati Reds baseball VS the Dodgers.
WGN was in the mix on 720 with their Sports Central show. WCBS which is usually the strongest stateside station was not nearly as strong tonight. WLW was the big winner tonight & that is the only station I hear down here on 700. It truly has been a clear channel since I've been here & it's the only one.

That was KVNS without a doubt.

Good catch! That's a 2,065 mile catch of a .88 kw station.

I'm using a Grundig G5. I was less then 50 ft from the beach when I was listening during the day.

Two of my many PR DX locations have been at Ashford Avenue at Del Parque, about a half-mile east of the Marriott in the Condado district, and in the Isla Verde area at my daughter's home right behind the Embassy Suites. One was right on the ocean, the other maybe two blocks away.

What a coincidence! My usual listening locations have been the Marriott and one of three different hotels on Isla Verde - all quite close to the Embassy Suites.

KVNS has a great signal in the Caribbean Basin - it is the second most dependable US nighttime signal in Costa Rica (just behind 50 kw KGOW Houston). I am not at all surprised that you picked them up in PR, I actually got them (weakly) when I was in the DR - a couple hundred miles west of you, but inland.

^^^

Oh wow, I shoulda hinted at KGOW....19 kW nights, I think. However I know there is a 1560 in PR, so that might be a moot point.

BRNout who has DXed from here often, told me earlier in the week conditions vary nightly. How right he is.
Tonight I heard WLS not only for the first time on this trip, but it was the strongest Stateside on the dial. Clearly heard the last few minutes of Sean Hannity & then WLS' station break at 9PM CST (11PM here). After that I snagged WBBM for the first time also.
Not nearly as strong as WLS, but definitely in there.
With those two new ones & the usual WGN in the books I decided to go after WSCR & WMVP. 670 had two strong Spanish language
talkers so nothing doing there. There was a crowd on 1000 also, but I did detect a English language talker, but not long enough or strong enough to identify.
Then to top it off I got a good signal on WEFL 760 with the Miami Heat San Antonio game.
Several new ones tonight & most from the midwest. New York was not in there when I was listening.

You never know for sure from night to night what you may hear the best.
