DXing in Hawaii

Attn: "stormy01" or anyone else who may have info: How did you find out about the stations in the Marshall Islands & Taiwan?
I'd like to be able to look up that info in case I catch anymore split channels from the far east. TIA.

Meanwhile here's tonights new catches on Oahu:

640: KFI first time on this trip because of IBOC on Honolulu 650
860: KTRB pretty decent signal around 8:20 HST
1150: KTLK decent signal with some fading`
1580: KBLA Santa Monica

Absolutely nothing on 810. That KGO null is keeping it totally silent here. Not even a sniff of KGO.
No luck so far on 730 with Vancouver or Mexico City although I can hear something trying to come through on 730
No luck with any ex-banders although I can hear some jumble on 1640 & 1700
KNX seems to come in best around Hawaiian sunset.

Two more catches late last night after 11PM Hawaii time:

680 KNBR tough because of local 690 in Honolulu
1170 KFAQ confirmed at 11:06 HST--Tulsa, Ok is the record for this trip so far.
1640 ? only station on ex-band so far. Sounded like religion. Anyone know what this could be?

1640 might be KDIA from San Francisco market. They are Christian Talk. They run 10 kw directional at night, although they have a bit of null toward Hawaii. Still, I would say they are running the equivalent of 5kw toward Hawaii at night. Here are their antenna patterns. http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/ampat?call=kdia&sid=.

Your best signal from KDIA might be right around San Francisco sunrise, when they change to 10 kw non-directional.

That would be ironic if that was KDIA because that was the first ever DX I heard on the ex-band in Illinois in the mid 90s.
At that time they were playing an R&B format and running 1KW ND at night.

Heard in Hawaii tonight on 1670 weak spanish language station. Couldn't get it well enough to ID, but guessing it was KHPY Moreno Valley, Ca.
Mainland DX strong tonight from KNX, KIRO, KSL, & KFAX. KNX was the strongest tonight.

I like how we're all DXing vicariously through radioman. He's making me jealous, I haven't been out of town for any period of time since the summer when I was in Florida. I've gotten bored of my local radio dial, I need to go on a "DXpedition"!

Re: DXing in Hawaii (How did you find out about stations in Marshall Islands?)

Hi Radioman,

I use the "WRTH" The World Radio TV Handbook. It can be purchased for about
$23 on amazon.com [not including shipping] (or buy.com has it for about $25
including shipping)

If you prefer at least this website comes to mind: http://radiostationworld.com/
Unfortunately it does not appear the above website does direct frequency searches.

Tonights new catch on Oahu is XEPE 1700 "San Diego" best ex-bander I've heard so far.
Heard a signal on 750, don't know if it was KFQD or KXL as the Honolulu 760 prevents me from deciphering it.
Again heard KFAQ Tulsa around 9:30 HST. Remains the farthest DX yet on this trip.
Thought I heard a split on 737 or 738. Anyone know what this could be?

738 kHz. may be Radio Tahiti, listed in WRTH as running 20 kW. I often hear their heterodyne against KCBS late at night,

with audio, usually group singing, breaking through occasionally. ( here in Los Angeles )

Thanks for the help. I'll keep listening.

My guess is KXL. I never snagged it when I spent my junior year of high school in Honolulu in 64-65. Same reason as you....too close to KGU's stick. KEX, however, was a relatively easy catch from Portland on 1190....especially when local 1kw KOHO on 1170 was off.

The local on 1170 is gone which allows me to hear Tulsa. Heard KNX well on the car radio tonight at sunset.
First chance I've had to DX from the car. Others I picked up in the car tonight were KTNQ, KBLA, KEX, and KPNW.

Strongest signals from the mainland tonight since I've been here.
For the first time tonight I heard 1090 Seattle around 11:05 HST. Seems to be a hetrodyne on 1089--wonder where that's from?
1150 LA quite strong along with 710 KIRO & the Phil Hendrie show.
860 & 1100 San Francisco strong, but still no KGO or KCBS.

At 1:00AM HST picked up a foreign language on 774 for the first time.
Anyone with a WRTH have any idea where this one is? Western pacific maybe?

774 kHz. may be NHK Akita, Japan ( 500 kW) . I can usually hear a carrier with the BFO on, sometimes hearing audio.

Other NHK stations heard are 594 kHz. Tokyo ( 300 kW), 747 kHz. Sapporo ( 500 kW), 828 kHz. Osaka ( 300 kW)

(from Los Angeles )

Any reception of the Midwest giants such as WLW, WHAS, KMOX or any of the Chicago clears?

Not on this trip. The frequencies are much too crowded now. For example on 1120 KPNW Eugene, Or comes in every night instead of KMOX.
However, when I was out here in 1978 I did pick up WLS, WBBM, and WWL.

I've sure enjoyed your trip Radioman...hope you (or someone who posts here) goes again soon!
