DXing In Hawaii

I'll be returning to Hawaii at the end of this month. As was the case last year I'll be DXing the AM/MW band while I'm there. If anyone has any suggestions as to what I may try for, bring em on.
My distance records last year were--on the mainland KFAQ Tulsa, 730 Mexico City, various stations from the far east which I was not able to identify due to the language barrier for me, and the farthest of all was Brisbane Australia. Also heard several extra band stations from the west coast.
I'll be trying for all those again plus hopefully new ones.

Happy hunting, you lucky duck!

DXing the Far East certainly is a challange! From Hong Kong I was able to catch stuff from the Philippines to India, but there was an awful lot of stuff, of which I had no clue, due the language barriers!

If you've got your lap top and WiFi access while DXing, sites such as FMSCAN (http://fmscan.org/main.php) would come in very handy.

Good luck in HI!!! Tell us what you got radioman148!

Don't forget 1190 KEX....my first mainland catch when I lived there my junior year in high school. KTNQ and KNX also ridiculously easy (but I think you've "been there, done those")

Anyway, have a safe and enjoyable trip...and "happy DXing"! We'll be expecting regular full reports!

>>What will you be bringing along in the way of receivers?>>
I will have my Grundig G5. It's nice & compact and easy to travel with. Did a good job for me last year.

Crainbebo--some of the stations you listed I've already heard out there. KIRO, & KCBS last year. KCBS is tough because they don't throw much signal that way. Heard WLS about 30 years ago, but not last year. I will try for it again.
I will have wifi access so I will use that in conjunction with my listening. Thanks for the suggestions Stormy & Tincap.
Cyberdad--I did hear KEX out there it's one of the stronger signals. KNX & KTNQ are very easy. KFAX was the easiest along with KTNQ.
Everyone feel free to throw in any suggestions. I'll be heading out there Feb 27 and I will report regularly on what I hear. I hope the conditions are as good as they were last year.

We can't forget KVNS.

And I know you said you've already attempted to pick uo some California stations during the day but what about with a loop antenna?

KFI and KNBR really seem to go far out in the Pacific, though I agree Hawaii is really pushing it.

I would cast my vote for KFQD (750) out of Anchorage. I pulled them in on Maui, but they would be tough on Oahu with KGU next door. WOAI or WBAP if you are on any of the islands besides Oahu. XERF (1570) would be another challenge.

Enjoy your trip, radioman. I may go down to the Gulf coast this summer, maybe for AM (depending on the loudness of the lightning static crashes that may occur there every night) and FM DX.

Last time on 1700 I heard the ESPN station out of Tijuana/San Diego. As far as daytime DX other Hawaiian Islands are the only thing I've ever heard. 2,500 miles of groundwave even over salt water is extremely tough.
dlf--I had no luck trying for Anchorage with 760 in Oahu although I did try and I will try again.

Even where I am, there are times I can't hear KVNS at all and sometimes for long stretches too. But when it's there, it's really there with a big punch.

I'll bet if you tried different times and different nights, you're sure to get it eventually

I will definitely give it a try.

Apologies for veering slightly off topic....

I'm on the Gulf Coast right now (Perdido Key on the FL-AL state line where we always stay). Big surprise this time around is a surprisingly strong WGN. Alone on the channel nightly with a really decent signal.

Might be tough duty to try for 'GN in Hawaii...even a "new and improved version" if that's what it really is....what with KUAI and KDWN. But as posted previously, I did snag WLS (and WWL) on the north shore of Oahu back in the mid '60s.

WGN is not doable in Hawaii because of KUAI. Like you I heard WLS & WWL there in 1978. Also picked up WBBM then, but now it's much tougher to hear those in Hawaii because those frequencies are much more crowded.

Has anyone ever picked up an FM mainland station while in Hawaii? I have been to Hawaii five times, and I have never had such luck. For fellow FM DX'ers, I know some good spots on Oahu to pick up neighbor island stations. For example, most Maui stations are audible on the beach on Hanauma Bay.

Tropospheric Ducting could be possible, but not nearly as likely as Sporatic-E skip.

You'd HAVE to use double-hop Es to get anything beyond Hawaii on FM.

At least these articles are mentioning it is possible, though no frequencies or call letters are given...hmm...

"...indeed the current tropospheric DX record belongs to Sheldon Remington on the Big Island, who logged some FMs on Mexico's western bulge."
http://www.anarc.org/wtfda/dx_history.htm

"This form of ducting [Tropospheric] is responsible for fairly reliable propagation between California and Hawaii at VHF and higher frequencies."
