When I was very young, I visited relatives in Ogdensburg, NY, and DXed, sort of, radio and TV. I remember hearing "Purple People Eater" and "Does The Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor" on WSLB 1400 on their Zenith AM-FM Table Radio, which was Purple, oddly enough. They had an Alliance T-45 type rotator, actually an earlier model. I couldn't see the antenna for the trees. The capacitor had gone bad in the control box and the needle bounced around. I was confused. It was normally pointed at WCNY-TV 7 Carthage Watertown, and I ended up with it pointed toward CJSS-TV 8 Cornwall with a Test Pattern and playing "The Swingin' Shepherd Blues" before sign on. Also, I saw WSYR-TV 3 and WHEN-TV 5 from Syracuse, which faded in and out a lot. Channel 9 was nearly nonexistent. When my parents and relatives returned that night from visiting Ottawa, they were somewhat perturbed that the rotator had been turned and not returned toward WCNY-TV Carthage Watertown. We had seen WCNY-TV 7 Carthage Watertown in Belleville, ON where we stayed the previous night. They keep saying the ID very frequently and I think they must have been getting a lot of Tropo reports. It was in late August as I remember. All these years, after Frank Sinatra finally put Watertown on the map, I can still hear the ID in my mind. Now they've all changed call letters and channels, but I think WWNY-TV is still Carthage Watertown.
