DX'ing Just Before Sunset

Here in NE Ohio just outside of Youngstown, I've been pleasantly surprised that I've been able to catch some of my old stations from AL, GA & TN just before they power down at sunset.

On 690, WJOX from Birmingham has been a regular almost every night for the past couple of weeks before they power down at 6:00 PM EST. I've also been hoping to hear WOKV from Jacksonville, FL but haven't caught them yet.

On 1070, it's usually WAPI from Birmingham but sometimes I receive WFLI from Lookout Mountain/Chattanooga instead.

Then last night, I was on 550 and heard mention made of NE GA and to my surprise I was hearing WDUN from Gainesville, GA which only runs 10,000 watts during the day.

Why is it that on some nights I may hear one station instead of the other on 1070? Is it because of atmospheric conditions? As the days continue to get longer will I start hearing different stations on these frequencies say during the summer months right before sunset?

funny you should mention 690-I caught 690 Jacksonville FL just after local sunset (round 6PM- I think) here in central Mass. Station was definitely listenable.
And I caught a real flea power on 690 from West Va also on 690.
I've DXed while at the beach in FLA (west coast) an hour or 2 before sunset and caught a number of X banders from the Dallas TX area and OK but on a GOOD car radio.

I'm guessing the "flea power" 690 is WELD in Fisher, WV?
I have recently started getting that here in the Pittsburgh area.
They are supposed to be running 500W at that time of day.

freddy- yes that's the station I got; from about 500 mi E NE of Fisher WVA. Got the ID. But no log. But one cannot rule out anything.

500 watts can go a long way under certain conditions such as sunset. I used to be CE of a station with 500 night directional. Received regular reception reports from all over, often from th e side of the main lobes of the DA. Old class IV stations ran 250 watts at night and would get reports from hundreds of miles away.

I've pulled in WELD 690 before around sunset. They are a locally owned station and will reply if you contact them. They were able to confirm that they were running 500 watts at the time I pulled them in. I actually get them quite regularly around sunset, but their days are numbered as Montreal will be bringing the big 50kw 690 back to air sometime this spring I've heard.

On my Tennessee trips I've been able to get WOKV regularly...they eventually cover up Bristol's WZAP which screams fire and brimstone. I'd like to get WFLF on 540 but no luck there. Back home in the shadow of WLW's tower...forget about WOKV or much of anything else on 690

Don't give up on WOKV in your location. I've heard them in southern Michigan, so they're certainly not impossible in Youngstown, Ohio.

I was actually able to catch WOKV just outside of Youngstown yesterday for about 5 minutes. Their signal wasn't that great but good enough to get an ID but then WJOX in Birmingham dominated until they powered down. Just before WOKV & WJOX, I heard an oldies station as well but was not able to ID.

1070 was dominated by The Fan.

WOKV has made it to Boise ID. After they went to day mode in the morning.

WOW!! When was THIS? On 690, I've caught CBU, XEWW, KRCO (day power) and CBKF-1, only.

WOKV (using WPDQ calls and an oldies format at the time) was widely heard when they stayed on 50,000 watt power at night during and after the landfall of Hurricane Hugo on the South Carolina coast.

Before 540 WFLF moved their towers to the same array as 740 you would have been able to receive them at times. I once picked them up in Wison, NC after dark in the 80's before 540 in Zebulon went nighttime. Now youre lucky to get 540 in the Villages.

In it's WGTO incarnation from Cypress Gardens, WGTO had quite the signal but I ever heard them in the north
Ah yes, for several years back in the 70's, I would take my daughters to St. Pete for our vacations. The portable radio was always tuned to WGTO.

Re post 15 n46gk? -my son used to teach in Eustis FL. Used to listen to AM 540 out of Orlando. When driving N on I 95 he told me he had the station on and off to near the Va border. Must be 600+ mi.
