DX'ing Midwest stations in MS

This evening in the car, here's what I've heard:

93.1 WXRT Chicago (AAA)
96.1 ESPN Grand Rapids, MI
97.1 Escanaba, MI (CHR)
97.5 WKLT Traverse City, MI (rock)
Eagle 96.7 Rockford, IL (classic rock)

These are the ones I was able to make out. I also heard another station in Minnesota (don't know what frequency). It made reference to the St. Louis County Fair in Chisholm. Anybody else get some good DX'ing today?

Yeah...

I drove today from Pensacola to Memphis, so I was in the car for most of the day. Unfortunately, I was in a rental car with a car radio that lacked so much sensitivity, one had to cram a brick through the front end to hear anything. Still, I IDed a few while driving through Mississippi (most activity was in the Jackson-to-Grenada leg).

WBUF/92.9 Buffalo, NY
CFNO/93.1 Marathon, ON
WIMK/93.1 Iron Mtn, MI
WGRY/100.3 Grayling, MI

I spent most of the time, though, listening to my 13 year-old yammer on the phone to her friends about horses. And, I had a cheapo 25W 10meter ham transceiver in the car with a converted CB mag mount on the roof. The E-skip had the band alive. I made many contacts and had a nice long chat with a guy in Maryland. But, I digress.

Too bad I wasn't home or had a better car.

I remember the old AC Delco radios used to pick up everything back in the late 80s-early 90s. My uncle drove a late-80s Chevy Celebrity that had an AC Delco and I was amazed at what it could get.

I wonder if today will provide any more activity.

There are, indeed, good car radios. The one in my Audi is fabulous. During Spring tropo this year, for instance, I heard 99.5/McAllen, TX at about 800 miles while only about 10 miles from WMC-FM's 300 kW on 99.7 (OK, the 300 kW is only in the horizontal plane and the car antenna is vertical; but we'll ignore that). In fact, since getting that car, 99.5 is among my best frequencies. But that car is in the shop. Thus, the Chevy Impala rental.

Still, I had a ball with that 10 meter HTX-10. It ain't the best 28 MHz radio out there, but I bought it used (but pristine) for $50 8 years ago. The antenna is a $40 CB mag mount I retuned for 10 meters. I think it's the frugal simplicity that amuses me. Under $100 and I worked maybe a dozen states on this trip.

I do have big boy radios, though. But it's tough to put them in a rental. Gotta drive to Lexington, KY tomorrow. If the band opens, the HTX-10 will get another workout.

While down in Tupelo yesterday I heard 3 stations battling on 92.3. I listened and the dominant station went to a spotset and there was a contest so I called the studio line that was given out. 207-626-9200. The station was 92 Moose. WMME in Augusta Maine. The guy kept saying he was sure I was probably listening online but I turned up the radio and let him listen through the phone and attempted to explain what was happening.

10 meters will still rolling well past 11pm last night. It looks like I need an HF/6m rig in the car.

DE what is your call?

KK4IOH? That would be a pretty new call. You got that late Spring, maybe?

I'm N4LI.

You know, I don't do a lot of serious hamming in the car -- it's a bit too distracting. But on the Interstate, it was fine. I have a Yaesu 8900 in the Audi. When the band opens, I can play 6m FM. Contacts can be made, but it's no more distracting than basic 2m FM.

Tested at free fest. Life long DX'er on the ticket and call sign are new.

Now I can make my own DX :)

And I have watched your YouTube videos and listened for your call on 2m/220 since.
Funny how we have corresponded for years on here already.

If you saw the video of me QRP/Portable, that's from where i was returning yesterday. We go there quite a bit.

Call me, if you hear me on sometime. And, if you have any ham-related questions, feel free to email. My call (at) arrl.net.

You may hear me calling the Delta Club Traffic and Information Net from time to time on 146.820.
I'm also a net control for Crittenden Co ARES on 147.150 on Wednesday Nights at 8:30pm.

and now back to the DX!

After reading several sites the E's went coast to coast with the MUF going pretty high at times.

Yes. The MUF was indeed high. It was well over 150 MHz for quite a while. Too bad I missed it; I haven't worked any 2m Es this Season. The good news is that it wasn't going anywhere I need -- there isn't much in the Northeast that I haven't worked.

As far as 10m staying open late... that's really not that uncommon. It just has been such a dry year that it seems that way. Typically, you might see a few nights a year when the band NEVER closes. Turn the radio on at 2am and those beacons are pounding away. An aside... those beacons are VERY useful; monitor the beacon band, if you don't do so already.

BTW: Once we start getting into Fall, you'll notice the complexion of 10m (my favorite HF band) really change. Before the SFI cratered in November last year, I was working Europe from the Cayenne in the gym parking with that same $90 station.

From Greenville, MS at appx 5:35 PM, I caught 107.3 Rouge FM from Montreal - also from a car stereo (2005 Chrysler Sebring)... commercials in French made it much easier to nail down.

I have been trying for days to tell this to anyone who would understand my excitement, and failed miserably.

So glad you all had your ears on.

Going the opposite direction, when I first moved to St. Louis, in 1975, there was a corner in one suburb that I could pick up 1300 from Jackson (I think it was still WRBC, but I'm not positive) every night like a local. The signal only lasted for maybe a quarter of a mile, but it was dependable as could be. Never made a lick of sense to me.

For Michael (above):

This weekend is the 10-10 Club phone contest. If the band opens, it can be a lot of fun -- it's a great opportunity to catch a few new states, etc. You need not be a member to participate; and you can make the necessary contacts to qualify for membership, if desired.

If the band doesn't open, it's less fun than watching Paula Deen lose weight.
