DXing the locals today WZKY/WAGL

Unless MRN has a stereo feed I don't know about, the WSOC broadcast would be in mono as would all the affiliates, AM or FM, stereo or not.

The feed would be in mono. The signal from WSOC would be in FM stereo as opposed to WZKY's AM stereo which are the two signals I compared, ie: the exact same product over the two different types of stereo. I'm not talking about seperation, just quality of sound.

;D Mike, you happen to know the whereabouts of Jim Dunlap?

Long time gone..... Passed away September 1999, but I have a feeling you know that.

Mike

Wow I thought everybody knew about that. Others who are no longer with us include:

Roby Younge WQAM/WABC/ Y-100/WMYQ
Don Wright WFUN/ WRMF
Bwanna Johnny WFUN
Badford Badd WFUN

There are probably others but those are just a few radio folks who passed away much too soon.

I'm listening around the AM dial to see what is going on. I first landed on WZKY and it amazes me they don't have a stronger signal here at my house on the east side of Charlotte. They are doing the ABC Oldies format with ABC news on the hour.
Are you sure it's ABC oldies? They were once Music of Your Life and Jones Soft AC before that. And ABC was Pure Gold when they switched to oldies, which wasn't nearly this conservative.

I moved down the dial to 1560 where WAGL's 50KW signal and "Music of Your Life" type programming is putting a good signal into my radio. Too bad there aren't some local announcers, just segued music off the computer but they are doing a nice job with it. Really old music...I know just about all the songs and artists :'(
This is good news for when I'm too far south for the Dial Global station.

I remember seeing WEGO in Concord? on my trips back to Fla..Seems like they were religious at the time and they were down in a hole on Interstate 85 on the left going south! Am I dreaming or was that true?

That's where they started...and their transmitter and antenna are still on that tower. Charlie Hicks bought WEGO from Suburban back in 1989, and he moved the studios to Cabarrus Avenue just west of downtown Concord.

WEGO was religious only for a brief time, for a few months in 1992 when Hicks consolidated WEGO's operation with that of WABZ in Albemarle. He eventually sold WEGO back to Suburban, and it returned to the Pure Gold format.

Later....

WEGO's tower site is down in a hole, but it is on Hwy 29 (aka Concord Pkwy). The building there is now vacant since CBS Radio's, WPEG Power 98, moved to South Blvd. in Charlotte.

So that begs the question....Where are the WEGO studios?

The WEGO studios are located in a little strip mall (if you can call it that) on Cabarrus Avenue in downtown Concord. It is between Barber Scotia College and the Police Department.
