dxing wi-fi networks

Has anyone ever done any dxing of wi-fi networks? If so, how far.

Haven't specifically but a friend took a laptop along on a couple of roadtrips and it was kind of interesting all the wi-fi networks he could pick up.

Some time ago I read about two guys who took 10' dishes on western mountain tops & secured a 120 mile or so connection. I am also familiar with a 2.4ghz wi-fi hop at 27 miles & a 5.8ghz hop at 34 miles...in both cases using dish antennas at each end. And in each case, 24/7 long term reliable. If the line of sight is there, amazing things can come from 1 watt.

Most wifi networks are too small for tropo enhancement. At the maximum allowed power of 1 watt, tropo could enhance the signal. I do notice that my cellphone reception inside a concrete building is better if there's tropo. Wi-Max might be enhanced by tropo.

I wonder if you beefed it up to 10 watts on those big dishes if 150 miles would turn into 500? (Maybe more)

Just make sure your not cutting someone else off when you run this test!

My guess is that it wouldn't affect the range to any great degree. At 2.4ghz, if you have line of sight, there's hope. With earthbound antennas, 500 miles is pretty unlikely. The 150 mile hop was probably at the upper end with any power level at 2.4ghz.
