DX'N in eastern CT.

Last Fri morn while in the car:
On the MA/CT line on I-86 (near Sturbridge MA) got a very faint and ID on WBAP 820, Ft. Worth at 6:00 a.m EST (first time heard up here), a decent WHO 1040 Des Monies, IA. About 15-20 mi west (halfway between Hartford Ct and Sturbridge, Ma and only about 50 mi from Worcester, MA, WCRN 830 (Worcester 50kw) faded out and was replaced by a consistent WCCO Minneapolis.
I don't know how to calculate the mileage from Sturbridge, MA to Ft. Worth TX but it must be about 1600 mi. BUT the station was not really "listenable' although I ID'd it when they gave their calls.
No sign of KFI-a friend got it consistently from CT in the 1960's and I've tried off and on but to no avail.

vibe, the distance is from Sturbridge to Mansfield TX (location of WBAP's xmtr), just SE of Ft. Worth is 1521 miles, a little less than you'd figured but nevertheless a great catch. BTW, here's a handy site for figuring distance: www.indo.com/distance/

There is unfortunately a LOT more interference on 640 than there was in the 1960s - and KFI lost their tower to a stray airplane a few months ago, so they aren't at full facilities right now.

680 (KNBR, San Francisco) may be a better bet, unless Toronto or Raleigh are too loud at your location. I hear them frequently here near Nashville, then again I'm in Raleigh's null and a LOT further from Toronto than you are!

Dallas is a pretty good catch from there! How's 850? Denver should be doable. Probably the furthest west I would really expect to hear there would be Calgary, Alberta: the 1140 station there sometimes just BLASTS into the East.

Dallas is a great catch from that area!! I was never able to catch it from southern NH when I lived there. Although I've picked up KOA on 850 in PA, it will be really tough from anywhere in New England thanks to WEEI Boston and (to a lesser extent) WKNR Cleveland. Although WEEI is directional away from your area (toward the east), you still get some signal out of them - enough to muddy up the frequency. For example, I have heard them and WRKO in places like Albany - where they are not "supposed" to be audible.

The 1140 is an interesting suggestion. WRVA is on the frequency, but they don't have the best signal in the world. Also, there may be some Canadians left from the Maritime provinces (those that are still on the air) which you could pull in. I think 720 Charlottetown is off now - though it may have just changed format. It often came in under WGN.

Not being overly close to any stong tx sites, you should be able to pull in a lot of interesting stuff. Good luck - let us know what else you pull in up there!

A little geographically offset, but if you're ever in Hawaii, be sure & rent a car for at least 1 night. 640 & 1070 from LA are both there at about 2400 miles...weak, but there's no interference. There may have been others, but being from Indiana, those are the only two I knew to look for.

My most distant catch on AM was 1650 in California when there was almost no activity in the expanded band. It was an all traffic, all the time station. I'll never hear it again...same goes for 1680 near Orlando...that was here every night before the dial got cluttered.

Anybody have an idea who's turning on the IBOC HD on 850 well before sunrise? There's an obnoxious hiss in WHAS 840 at just 80 miles 2 hours before Indiana sunrise...and that ain't right. Same hiss is on 860, but not 870. Somebody must think that their PSRA includes HD.

1650 from California is probably unlikely. 1680 from Orlando not so much. Orlando seems very doable from Indiana.

During regular conditions in Michigan, my farthest west is KOA 850. But I was able to hear KMTI 650 from Manti, UT (1400 miles) during a DX test last week.

Don't worry, you'll have a chance to hear "Que Buena Orlando" 1680 WLAA Winter Garden again,. they don't like to power down!

Thanks for the DX ing tips y'all (incl how to calculate mileage). The WBAP station was real faint and I was lucky to ID on the hour. It was "here and gone"; it may count but it's a cheapie in my book.
DX'n KOA in New England is prob close to impossible due to WEEI; I think it's theoretically possible to get KOA around Danbury CT; I've gotten KOA in western PA and in Englewood FL-probably equidistant (need to use that web site!).
For some reason 1140 Richmond nearly always puts out a strong signal into New England.
I've tried for 680 out of S.F down here in FL and in the Southeast but 680 is REAL cluttered.I use an old Bose wave radio it may not have a REAL strong tuner but it is very directional and I've nulled out a lot closer 850's in FL to get KOA.

DXers suspect the Alberta station is staying on day facilities sometimes. But the ground conductivity out there has to be heard to be believed; in general stations in central Canada get out *forever*... I hear CFAC 960 Calgary quite a bit here in Nashville, though I suppose the higher interference level on the regional channel would make it a pretty difficult catch in Massachusetts.

Yes, 720 Charlottetown is now off; the only AM stations on Prince Edward Island are two 40-watt travelers' information stations. AM stations in the Maritimes are disappearing quickly. There are only seven in New Brunswick (one of which has a permit to move to FM) and eleven in Nova Scotia, three of which are going FM.
