I recieved this e-mail in response from Robb Case:

Hi to all of you and thanks for listening to 91.5 FM and responding. I am
sending out a response to all of you as a group ( I am sending this out in
groups of 50) I found it nearly impossible to write back to each of you
individually. But in the future I will try.
So, many good ideas for the station and format. First, let me tell you that
we have nearly completed all the testing of the signal and have a few
physical modifications to make to the antenna system but can't until the
temperature comes up a few degrees. But it should not impede your listening.
I have noticed since there has been some consolidation in ownership of radio
stations in our market that many of you can't find something you like. We're
working on that. Yes, I flew the helicopter and reported for Channel 4 for
22 years but started out my broadcast career in radio. I worked at 880 AM,
103.9 FM, WTVN, and 92X (WCOL FM). I also tried my hand at acting and was in
the movie "Hairspray". If you watch it you'll have to look closely to find
me but I had a small speaking role as one of the radio station owners.
Here were some of your ideas for the format in random order.
(1) leave it alone we love the 80's music commercial free. By the way, that
is my youngest daughter doing the legal ID's at the top of each hour. (and
we will be recording new ones soon) (2) Progressive talk since we lost 1230
WCOL (3) NPR combined with local talk (4) K-Love type Christian music (alot
like 104.9 FM) (5) a mix of 70's-80's-90's but more of the obscure hits not
the same ten songs over and over (6) Southern Gospel and Blue Grass (7) some
wanted to host their own talk show.
There were many more some were real obscure but we looked at all of them and
we're still open to ideas. We're getting closer to finalizing this and
really appreciate you being apart of it. I am reading every e-mail that
comes and will respond as I get time. Keep in touch through this e-mail
address.
Sincerely,
Robb Case

Southern Gospel and Blue Grass. Good grief, talk about niche.

For that matter, what about K-Love on a 44,000 watt signal. Big signals should at least TRY to program something that would appeal to a large number of people. More Christian crapola ... what a waste!

How about adding another Pacifica radio station(LMA)?I would love to listen to"Free Speech Radio"and"Democracy Now".I also would love to hear some shows from KPFK and KPFA,including their Friday night music programming. When I was in LA,I listened to their shows everyday and I miss it so much.

Please refer to the previous post. Thank you.

I took special note of the comment, "I have noticed since there has been some consolidation in ownership of radio
stations in our market that many of you can't find something you like. We're working on that." That's nice to hear. Something like the current music mix would fit the bill, if there's some creative way to make it happen.

Regardless of what he does with HKC, I think Case's reply was a nice gesture.

I think Case is being sincere, radio is a business though and without money you can't pay the bills so he will have to ultimately pick a format that will keep the lights on at WHKC and the tower rent paid. Hopefully it will be a format that is not covered elsewhere on the dial though. Mr Case could already be cashing LMA checks from K-Love or another sat-caster so I think he is being sincere in trying to find a proper format for 91.5.

Robb Case sent this e-mail out Saturday morning, looks like 80s format is still in the running.

Hi everybody,
I wanted to thank you all for your feedback in the past few weeks. We are still researching the format options for 91.5 FM. We've eliminated many but the 80's format is still one at the top of the list. I had a request... (but I hate it when I get asked to fill out questionaires and respond) so if you have time and can write back it would be a great help but if not don't worry...just enjoy the music. Here's the question: if you like the 80's format and would like us to keep it. Tell us your age (approximates are OK
ladies) and where you listen. Car, work, home, other.

That's all. In the meantime, we are going to eliminate the Christmas music for sure today. We have a bad label on a song or two and the computer doesn't recognize the song as holiday music. Also, I may go on the air again this weekend and try and take calls and requests. We'll see.
It is a joy and honor to serve you. Your feedback is always, always, welcome.
Sincerely,
Robb Case

Funny. I'm listening to Mariah Carey "All I Want for Christmas" as I write this. ;)

Sounds as if their music was just thrown in to a big pile rather than organized into categories. Any Librarians wanting to volunteer and help organize their music? :p I've had that problem my self at times, although not with Christmas music.

Interesting. I've lisetened very heavily over the last few days and haven't heard any Christmas. Must be a rare slip in the clean-up.

I think it would be great if he kept the current music. And I'm impressed by Case's continued correspondence. Classy.

This morning at about 7:19am as Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silences was finishing up it was followed by silence up until the next song which started about 7:23am. At first I thought they had technical difficulties, then I noticed that the last song's title was "Enjoy the Silence", followed by about 4 minutes of silence. Does Robb Case have a since of humor?

Probably more like his Audisk has a sense of oops.

Would Triple A fly on this signal? At least it would fill a format gap in Columbus. 80s oldies are still pretty popular too, but so many other stations already play 80s music.

..but not consistently and with good variety. Or they mix it with intolerable stuff, or stick to the sappy stuff like WSNY, or rock-only like BZX, CD-101 or the Brew (the latter of which admittedly expands into pop-rock at times).

Great point. There are a ton of 80s songs that get little or no airplay on other stations. Star 107.9 was a great 80s station, I just think it was way before its time for long-term success. I think in all seriousness that 80s would be mega-popular with the correct execution, and on 91.5's 44,000 watt monster signal, they would have the one thing that Star didn't have to make it ultra-successful: A proper and great signal.

91.5's 44,000 watt monster signal

How come this "monster" signal won't penetrate Canal Winchester?

I believe the signal is aimed to the North East for 91.5. As for the week signal on 107.9, they could always request to move the tower to a location where the FCC would permit a stronger signal. Yes, it's a lot of paper work, but it's been done before, so in theory, STAR 107.9 could come back with the 80s, stronger then before.
