I believe the signal is aimed to the North East for 91.5. As for the week signal on 107.9, they could always request to move the tower to a location where the FCC would permit a stronger signal. Yes, it's a lot of paper work, but it's been done before, so in theory, STAR 107.9 could come back with the 80s, stronger then before.

107.9 will never have a better signal "in" Columbus as long as 107.5 is there.

Did anyone else catch the Karen Carpenter Christmas song today? Maybe by the time DST starts they will clear it out...

Maybe they could go with an all Christmas music format, 24x7x365. I know of an internet broadcaster that does that and they have a really good listener base. Of course with the Copyright Royalty Boards rate hike, they may be closing shop soon.

If this goes on about another two months, maybe they could do a Cinqo de Christmas contest like 93.3 did last year.

LOL... Cinqo de Christmas... man forgot all about that. That will have to go down as one of the all time dumbest Columbus radio stunts of all time.

I thought in the last email that Oprah had hijacked his account with the book suggestion. It's not a bad book, but sheesh!

What book selection? Are you sure that wasn't a personalized email?

Here's the e-mail:

Good morning everyone,

I am sending out this e-mail to all of you who are listening to the
station each day and have responded in one way or another. We are adding a
few new songs each week or so and are trying to keep the music fresh. I
receive e-mails each day from you and take each one to heart. I've tried to
write back to you when you've written in. We will be making the format
decision this month...for sure. The 80's format is phenomenally popular and
at the top of the list but others are close. There is no strong talk format
on FM in this market so we are looking at that as well. We've already
eliminated the "lunar" type formats that would have limited appeal. The
strength of the signal is important factor in determining the format. There
are many ways to go as you can imagine but we want to do the best format for
Columbus since we've been given a license to serve here.

On another note...and not trying to sound to "Oprah Winfreyish" I wanted to
share something else with you. When I find something that is life changing
or of profound wisdom I tell a few of my close friends about it. When I find
a book I give them the title or buy it for them. So, it can change their
lives too. I read a book recently that brought me insight and thoughts I had
never had before.
It changed my personal relationships with nearly everyone I know. It's
called "How We Love" by Milan and Kay Yerkovich. If you can find it it will
change your life too. In it you will see yourself and others and how we
sometimes don't relate to each other in the best ways. If you have any other
people in your life (boyfriend, girlfirend, husband, wife, Mom, Dad,
sister,brother...anyone) it will help you.
I derive no benefit from recommending this book to you...except for knowing
your life will be better because you found it.
Mine has.
WHKC-FM ...more than just music for people...a relationship with people.
Sincerely,
Robb Case

Oh, I didn't know there was a third email.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but I'm afraid talk may be pretty much a foregone conclusion given Robb's enthusaism for "a strong talk format on FM" despite the fact that 80's is "phenomenally popular."

I did some research on the authors of "How We Love," and one of them, Milan Yerkovich, has a radio talk show on the Life Ministries program. (In Ohio, New Life Ministires is broadcast on WJHE Newark and WCVX Cincinnati. It's also on XM and Sirius.) So maybe Christian talk, or a sale to Salem or K-Love will mark the end of the 80's format. This is especially true given that Robb's company is Christian Broadcasting Services.

Oh, well. I'm not by any means saying Robb's being insincere touting continued 80's as a strong contender. But I'm less hopeful after this latest email.

Even if they change, I appreciate WHKC giving this market great music on a good signal for more than a few months.

Putting a radio license in the hands of a bible-banging "saved" Catholic (Case) who is a follower of a "saved" Eastern Orthodox (Yerkovich) is nothing short of discouraging. I'm starting to believe that Case is nothing other than another Bill Swad ........ using God as an excuse to hard sell people and screw them out of money (he made his money selling office phone systems) ....... then thanking God for all their riches. It's amazing how many of these sales types invoke God .... just go to an Amway convention or talk to a real estate person.

This is very discouraging.

It's interesting to note that the only commercial station in town that regularly touts its 80's Rock focus on air -- the Brew -- dropped back down some in the new Winter Ph 1 trend.  While we really can't draw any solid conclusions at this point, I do wonder if 91.5  might have had something to do with that.  For my personal tastes the Brew's music isn't bad, but 91.5 has a far more enjoyable variety -- even if Karen Carpenter *does* still shows up with a Christmas ditty every now and then!

It's a non-comm station, listener supported, so how much money are you willing to send in once or twice each year to keep that "enjoyable variety" coming? My guess is the same as everyone else (zero), because the same songs are already being aired on eight other local stations that don't ask you for a dime.
Mr. Case is going to have bills to pay, and I'm not sure that a limited-appeal format is such a bad option, if it means that those who like it are willing to strongly support the station financially. They'll know their favorite music can't be heard anywhere else on the FM dial (as opposed to everywhere else), and so they'll be far more likely to monetarily show their appreciation for it.
But hey, maybe the guy's planning on paying for it all out of his own pocket, which would mean he doesn't have to concern himself with stuff like that. It's going to be kind of weird, though, if the current playlist continues permanently. Nothing but already overplayed commercial music on a non-commercial station? Is the FCC okay with that?

Harry,

I'm a broadcaster, a Realtor and a Christian.

God is in my heart, my mind and my actions, not in my business literature.
You have made some very relevant posts in many topics and though I don't agree, I can understand your apprehensions and frustration about religious ownership. Your constant jabs at Christians however, are not necessary. You don't have to live in poverty to be a believer. You don't have to be silent to be a believer. To be a believer, you have to believe, that's it.

I am asking you, as one human being to another and with respect to please tone it down.

I believe 91.5 has had an impact on stations that do play 80s. I know my personal listening habits have gravitated to 91.5. The Brew's 80s, is very one sided, not a lot of variety. While 91.5, although not all 80s, seems to currently cover a nice variety of 80s, it keeps me listening just to see what they will play next. Being non-comm, I still don't see how he can keep playing 80s. Of course if the Copyright Royalty Board does to FM/AM radio what it just did to Internet Radio, we all may be listing to talk radio. That is when "Talk is Cheap" will be a very true statement.

Until his 91.5's format change, I'll keep enjoying the 80s.

Excellent points... why not listen while we have it. Its much like Sirius 8 ( all 80's) but its Free. If you Brew you get 30% mind numbing commercials and patter.
