E-Skip 2013 Season

When does it start?

I got some questions for all

Alot of times I can't check the Sporadic-E clouds location and estimated MUF real time map all the time,

1. How can I tell if I skip is moving in?

2. How can I make out a Skip or a Tropo?

3. If I # on the Map is like 60 range the map, does that mean it effects to Ch 2 or lower?

Thanks all for the answers

Check the TVFM Skip Log.

dxworld.com/tvfmlog.html. There is a DXer - Mike in CM87, who posts on there once in a while. CM87 I think is your ham grid (San Francisco). I am Seattle CN97 on the log (so if Es or Tr is happening, see my mark as Seattle CN97).

Also check the DXmaps 6m maps

It helps more than checking just the Es MUF maps. If the color red is abundant in the Northern California area, check your FM dial. Since there is no way to check for KWGN on ch 2 or KTVK on ch 3, since the DTV transition, this is about as good as it gets.

First thing to remember about this page is that you have to 'refresh' it every time you look if you've clicked away and gone elsewhere.

When does it start?

It's already underway. Haven't had any yet myself but the map has shown MUFs above 88 Mhz up north. (and many above 55 Mhz which would be in the analog ch 2 - 6 range)

1. How can I tell if I skip is moving in?

Find your location on the map.

Whenever you see 'clouds' with a MUF above 88 Mhz roughly 500 miles away from you (say 400 to 600 miles), you can check the FM band but that doesn't necessarily mean you will experience E skip because it depends on the exact height of the cloud the signal is skipping off of.

The most likely time you will get E Skip is when there is a cluster of 2 or more clouds above the right frequencies at the distances from you mentioned above.

If I # on the Map is like 60 range the map, does that mean it effects to Ch 2 or lower?

Correct.

I've received FM DX with MUFs listed of 59, 61, 62, etc. So gar fla, it would be better to check the 6 METER map, and not the MUF map.

Yes, I did notice that one time when I did things in reverse.

Instead of checking the map then going to the radio, I happened to be tuning around and I noticed E Skip from Texas. When I went to check the map, there was a cluster of Es clouds between here and there but they were only the green color, in the 50s and 60s range.

I figured maybe there was a delay in updating the MUF or something.

Well damn, I missed 3 HOURS of skip this morning to CO, SD, NE, ND, the places that I need most!

Only had an unknown 89.9 with weird native american like music. CKSB MB?

Thanks all for the link

I was listening to my Walkman this morning, not DXing..Just waiting for my Song to come on 997 now

Was California active this morning, craine said he missed 3 hrs

California was not affected. Only WA/OR. Local guy up here in Seattle was listening to the Global Tuners node in Eugene, OR and logged SD, MB, SK, ND. Local DXer in Seattle had CO, ND, SD. I had nothing but the 89.9 because I came home as soon as it ended! I think it might actually be La Ronge, SK MBC because CKSB does not match the weird Aborigines like music I heard.

There are maroon multi-hop-Es lines galore in the Eastern US & Canada, pointing to South America. I am often at the midpoint of these lines, therefore I get nothing at all. I did go to one or two of the Global Tuners, and I don't notice anything on NTSC ch 2 (oops ya know what? I was checking the video, and not the audio, freq; my bad), nor on the Chilean SCA Musica freqs.

However I did get TVN Panama (ch 3) at about 6:45 pm EST, and now it's swinging toward Mexico, which means that getting a local ID outta network programming won't be easy. iMas mejor que nada, por cierto!

cd

I listened to CFWD 96.3 out of Saskatoon via Walker Lake, NV, plus I also listened to 98.3 Ted FM from Jamestown between Fallon & Fernley, 105.5 CBC radio from Saskatoon in Hawthorne, 105.1 from Melfort, SK in Hawthorne, along with some other others, as well, some from Saskatoon, Minnesota, & North Dakota.

A lot of Es (that I missed  ) seemed to be from that area as well, dgendvil. The only thing I caught was the Aboriginal-like weird beat music on 89.9 mhz which could have actually been CJLR La Ronge, SK (MBC). It was NOT CKSB-MB, as the songs during the time I caught it do not have that weird beat on the music.
