E-skip! 6/7/2017 towards Midwest

East Coast had fun, while the Pacific NW got mainly scraps (except around 7:30-8PM). Still got two new ones and have some audio.

2:52PM - UNID 95.3 w/ news update mentioning the Iowa Department of Health, fade out and back with 'Beat It' Michael Jackson. Either KIFG Iowa Falls or KQMG Independence, but cannot find streams or playlists for both stations. They are both quite far into Iowa.
2:57PM - UNID 92.3 'Today's Hottest Music...' could be KKHQ IA (1429 miles)
2:59PM - 96.5 KNWC Sioux Falls, SD; with Christian Contemporary and TOH ID 'Life 96.5 is KNWC Sioux Falls'. NEW #549, 100KW at 1182 miles.
fade out, then...
3:25PM - 95.3 KDJS Willmar, MN; with weather forecast and ID 'Hot Country K-95.3'. Relog, 50KW at 1231 miles.
3:27PM - 97.3 KRVY Starbuck, MN; with adult contemporary ('All About That Bass' Meghan Trainor, and 'Karma Chameleon' Culture Club) matching webstream. Relog, 50KW at 1199 miles.
long fade out, then back
5:00PM - 95.3 KBBN Broken Bow, NE; with high school baseball game starting (mentioned Holdrege, suspect they were playing Broken Bow) and ID 'KBBN 95.3 the Thunderbird.' Relog (Not heard since 7/23/2009!), 30KW at 1100 miles.
5:03PM - 92.3 KBRY Sargent, NE; weather forecast and ID 'FM 92.3 K-Bear Country.' Relog (not heard since 6/2014), 100KW at 1105 miles.
both gone then KBBN back around 5:55 PT
went to unattended recording due to family plans
7:37PM - 97.5 KNXR Rochester, MN; ID 'Rochester's Greatest Hits, Minnesota 97.5'. Strong for several minutes on unattended recording while gone. NEW #550, 100KW at 1394 miles.

A DXer in Bend, OR (Dave Williams, on the TVFM log) had at least one new Duluth station, and his MUF was up to 104 mhz. Murphy's Law did it's thing while I was gone, but at least one more new station came out of it.
Audio to be posted shortly.

KNXR has a massive signal, so I'm not surprised that it made the hop during the e-skip event. When I was going to the Twin Cities on a frequent basis, they were listenable there and audible for about a third of my drive to and from there.

KNXR also has some history.... For about 40 years it had sort of a unique place among easy listening stations. The format was sort of a hybrid of soft instrumentals and covers of pop standards by contemporary artists. Sinatra, Diana Krall, etc....all presented by live jocks. The result sounded absolutely great!

There's also a direct connection with the airlines' in-flight audio entertainment....

When the late Chicago radio host John Doremus came up with the idea, he sold it to United Airlines, and used KNXR's extensive library of soft music to create the bulk of the content. I'm pretty sure the recording....or a good portion of it....was done at the KNXR studios. (Eventually, of course, the original owner sold his big signal, and now we have just another cookie-cutter FM music station).

But the old KNXR still lives on with an internet stream. Complete with recordings of Doremus' syndicated easy-listenuing programs. You can hear it at 97five.com.

Forgot to let you know, a DXer near Detroit (in Carleton, MI) logged KDRK-93.7 Spokane, WA yesterday (near the time I got KBBN). He's on the TVFM Skip Log (Eric B). Said he matched a couple of country songs to their webstream and it came in over WBCT! This is a rare double-hop Es log, with the mileage over 1,700 miles! Too bad I didn't have Michigan or Ohio yesterday.
I heard easy listening on 97.5 during a huge e-skip opening (towards MN, MB, ND). I never got an ID, so I will never know if I heard KNXR or KDKK Park Rapids (also adult standards/ez listening).

Definitely NOT KNXR, as Cyberdad was saying, EZ listening ended on KNXR a couple years ago.

Interesting story about Doremus' connection to KNXR, BTW.

No, no...sorry forgot to mention...the adult standards/easy listening stuff was heard on 97.5 during a huge Es opening to MN/WI/MB/ND on July 15th, 2014. Long time ago already. KNXR was still easy listening, and KDKK was adult standards/etc. Could have been either one but never got an ID. KWWK 96.5 was in during that particular opening, but mixing with CJPG Portage La Prairie! 94.1 was a mix of several stations but WIAL Eau Claire WI came out for local ads (1403 miles). It's still my only WI on FM.

Crain...KNXR flipped from easy listening in 2015. A little later than what I had thought. So, indeed in 2014, they would have still been easy listening. :)
