E-skip 7/10/14, 4 new - mainly Phoenix area

Bagged four more new ones today from an e-skip opening to Phoenix (and one Lubbock TX station).

11:05AM - 92.3 KTAR Glendale, AZ; weather forecast mentioning 110F in Phoenix, "KTAR.com" mention. NEW #293, 100KW, 1004 miles.
11:11AM - 93.3 KDKB Mesa, AZ; "Living on the Edge" Aerosmith, mention of request call-in number 602-260-9393. NEW #294, 100KW, 1021 miles.
11:13AM - 88.3 KNAI Phoenix, AZ; no ID, but heard Mexican music parallel to my semi-local La Campesina 96.3 KRCW Royal City. NEW #295, 22.5KW, 1013 miles. Strong signal.
11:16AM - 102.5 KNIX Phoenix, AZ; string of local ads including an ad for Safeway and one for a car dealership mentioning Scottsdale. NEW #296, 100KW, 1013 miles.
11:20AM - 95.5 KYOT Phoenix, AZ; song match to Aerosmith's "Living on the Edge." Relog at about 1015 miles.
11:21AM - 95.5 KAIQ Wolfforth, TX (!), ID "La Tricolor" and Mexican music swapping with KYOT. This was an unexpected relog at 1330 miles.

Another opening with two new ones and a relog from an interesting area.

7:02PM - 88.3 KESD Brookings, SD; long list of musical events going on in South Dakota, mention of "SDPB.org/calendar," "Support for arts programming on SDPB comes from..." NEW #297, 50KW, 1161 miles. Also captured a legal ID (SDPB is a statewide network, so there is DTMF tones before the local ID)
7:10PM - 97.3 KKSS Santa Fe, NM; "Euphoria Top 8 at 8", Kiss 97.3 ID. Relog at 1070 miles. VERY interesting - KESD was still booming in on 88.3 and this came in, extremely different bearing.
7:12PM - unid 90.7 K-LOVE, likely KQLV Santa Fe NM
7:31PM - 97.3 KAML Gillette, WY; long commercial break, many ads for Gillette and Moorcroft, mention of Buffalo Ridge Elementary School, an insurance company, etc. NEW #298, 100KW, 748 miles! Shortest new Es catch this year!
7:33PM - 88.3 unid religious preaching, likely KLMP Rapid City, did not ID and faded out
7:36PM - 88.9 unid K-LOVE likely the one in Gillette at 1.4KW, did not ID and faded out as well

Tuned the SRII on the FM this afternoon, had a clear but weak copy of CBU-FM on 105.7, very unusual for the fact there's a big hill in the way. Tropo enhancement. Heard a phone call fade in very strong on top of it -- two women talking -- and then fade out. Possibly the religious translator in Orting? Not really sure.

The tropo maps say we're in for some tropo the next few days. Might even reach into your area, crainbebo.

I'll be tuning the FM now and then over the next few days, see if anything crops up. The SRII and a couple of my digital portables seem to be the best on FM.

Got KNPR-88.9 Vegas and KLJZ-93.1 Yuma AZ, as well as an UNID 92.3 rocker (likely KOMP but did NOT ID!) around 11:15AM today 7/11. Also heard unid 88.9 medical talk show around 12:30, did not ID as well. Both KNPR and KLJZ are relogs. KNPR was first heard back in Bothell on May 27, 2010.

You have tropo openings over the next couple days, Mario. The Hepburn site tropo map shows good tropo openings on the 15th for your area. You may get some short FM skip from the North and South of you. You're in the middle of a big valley. Should be able to get something beyond the locals.

I live in a hole and when tropo's in, I can get a couple stations from Vancouver BC, about 160 miles away. And that's with a hill in the way. So don't rule out tropo.

Boombox - check early on Wednesday morning. Hepburn is predicting "good" tropo for Seattle metro and "strong" south of Seattle. "Intense" (7) at the coast...! The BEST beacon for strong FM tropo is 104.7. If you hear top 40, and it isn't e-skip, you most definitely have KDUK from Eugene/Florence, 250 miles from you. Always used to be a strong "beacon" when I lived in the Seattle area.

So THAT'S where the old KDUK call letters ended up. Thirty-plus years ago when I was living in Hawaii, that was the call sign of the old "98 Rock" in Honolulu.

I live in Phoenix now, so good catches on our local stations here.
