e-skip 7/7/08

nd2023

Banned
This morning I heard e-skip while I was driving. I did the wise thing and pulled over into a parking lot, then scanned the dial. I got stations from Florida to Texas here in NJ. I'll post my log later today.

Just a touch in the car with Spanish music on 88.5 mixing with WMUB in Oxford OH (I'm in Springfield OH) but that was all and it didn't last

Heard 6KW WNFK 92.1/Perry,FL in the car west of Indy this morning around 9AM. Heard other skip, but that was the only ID.

I picked up a station called "Cool 98" which plays "The Greatest Hits of All Time" on 98.3. They said they had a web address and I tried cool98.com (nope) and kool98.com. South Dakota? Impossible! I'm in North CAROLINA.

Maybe there's another Cool 98.

Here it is: my e-skip log today between 9:45-11:15 ET from NJ, in order of reception

Frequency Call Letters City State
95.3 unID "Y-95.3" country
94.9 WWRM Tampa FL
95.3 WPYO Maitland FL
92.9 WIKX Charlotte Harbor FL
93.3 WFLZ Tampa FL
93.7 KXKS Shreveport LA
96.7 KWCL Oak Grove LA
93.1 KQID Alexandria LA
96.9 WTCD Indianola MS
95.5 KAFX Diboll TX
93.7 KISR Fort Smith AR
96.7 KOYE Jacksonville TX
97.7 KNBB Dubach LA
99.7 KMJJ Shreveport LA
97.3 KQHN Magnolia AR

Cool 98.3 could have been WTKU from Ocean City, NJ. That would be too close for e-skip and a stretch for tropo, but still possible. There was tropo earlier this morning, and I picked up WQHQ 104.7 on tropo during the e-skip opening (what a pest!)
You could very well have gotten the South Dakota station, it's within 1 e-skip hop. A few e-skip openings ago, I got stations from South Dakota in NJ.
What time did you get Cool 98.3?

It's a long story but KQHN isn't in Arkansas. What you may be seeing is the remnants of a call letter shuffle and what still looks like a pending construction permit. Suffice it to say that the former Magnolia station (KVMA 107.9) moved into the Shreveport market to Oil City LA but after interference issues arose (mainly with communications at nearby Barksdale Air Force Base) Cumulus elected to move KVMA to 102.9, which was occupied by co-owned KBED in Shreveport since KVMA's Urban format was deemed to be more viable. After numerous moves and/or downgrades of outlying stations KBED's AC format re-emerged on what had been an unused allocation for Longview TX. That allocation was transferred to Waskom TX, almost on the Texas-Louisiana border. The new (or shall we say, re-born) station on 97.3 took the KQHN call letters, and their antenna is located a few miles to the east of Waskom in downtown Shreveport.

Since you were getting other stations in Louisiana and Arkansas, that might be KCXY Camden, Arkansas.

Quite a good E skip opening to FL this morning from about 7:45 to 11:15 here in southeastern WI

Here's what I heard on my Boston Acoustics Solo table radio.

88.1 WJIS Bradenton, FL "Joy FM"
88.7 unID'd Christian Contemp "Way FM"
92.3 WWKA Orlando, FL "K-92"
92.5 unID'd Spanish "La Nueva"
92.9 WMFQ Ocala, FL "Big 92.9"
92.9 WIKX Charlotte Harbor, FL "Kicks Country 92.9"
93.3 WFLZ Tampa, FL "93-3 FLZ"
94.9 WWRM Tampa, FL "The New Magic 94.9"
95.5 unID'd Classic Rock "Wind FM"
98.3 WRTO Goulds, FL "La Kalie 98.3"
98.9 WMMO Orlando, FL "Orlando's Music & more"
101.5 WPOI St. Petersburg, FL "The Point"

For me, this opening was as good as the 6/12/08 from TX.

Here's help with the unID's:

Way-Fm is a chain of Christian stations, locally programmed. On 88.7 it's WAYJ in Ft. Myers, FL. Here in Poughkeepsie, NY area, WAY-FM on 88.1 from West Palm Beach is definitely my most frequent E-Skip catch.

"La Nueva" is WYUU Safety Harbor, FL (Tampa).

"The Wind" is WNDD in Silver Springs, FL (Ocala) . WNDD is just a class A; nice catch!!

While checking our MATV system headend around noon today (Tuesday), I saw something on TV Channel 3 on the spectrum analyzer. Looked, at second glance, like a visual carrier!

Split it out to a TV set, and I saw some video intermittently. Had some very short bursts of audio, too.

Hepburn's site didn't show any tropo activity west of Salt Lake City except in the Pacific, so I don't know if it was a NV or CA station....maybe it was Hawaii. (I can dream, can't I? ;) )

6kw and even lower power stations can come in just as strong as 100kw if the skip is intense enough. A couple days ago from here in Florida I heard a 250 watt translator on 93.9 from Nebraska over 1100 miles away with a fair signal for about a minute or two. Luckily they happened to identify in that time. Sporadic E can be remarkably selective at times.

Way back in the day of 10 watt high school stations, a fellow DXer in Cincinnati heard a 10 watter from South Dakota on skip. More recently, a DXer in Illionois heard the 80 watt translator in Englewood,FL on skip. And I heard Perry,FL on 92.1 on my car radio a week or two ago...that was a 6KW. My first 3KW skip was KLOV, 102.3/Loveland,CO from Cincinnati around 1970. Since then I've learned that power isn't everything where DX is concerned. And that sometimes lower height stations are DXed farther than higher ones. An opening in the early 70's to the New York City area comes to mind...nothing from the Empire State Building was there, but the nearby college stations that were in the 150-300' tall range were there. Nothing levels the playing field like skip.

It was 10:30 EDT, and I do remember a reference to Huron. And there is one near the South Dakota station.

hearing 99.1 CBC made me homesick. the mono carrier and the deep accents made me think it was defiantly CBC.

on this cheap crap crane radio with QRM from the pc's. my friend jeff im very envious of. he's a ham and a devoted dxer. he watches WEAR on a regular basis in central illionis.
