E-Skip in December

I was driving near San Angelo, Texas around noon today and my seek and scan stopped on 99.5; the station was playing "I Love This Bar" and I thought that KQBR from Lubbock was putting out a good signal; it turned out to be WQYK from St. Petersburg, Florida. I also pulled in the following:

92.5 - Spanish - Tampa Bay area as well
97.9 - playing Nirvana; most likely 98ROCK (WXTB)
94.9 - "Feliz Navidad" WWRM
96.9 from Jacksonville "The Eagle"
93.3 playing "Voodoo" by Godsmack (I'm going with WPLA out of Jacksonville)
104.5 - an AC/DC tune - WFYV from Jacksonville
100.3 - Spanish - could have been WRUM from Orlando.

By the time I was south of San Angelo on 87, the opening had closed.

Sporadic-E continues

It looks like the December/January E-season is showing some beginnings.

Here in Memphis, E is getting into the TV band. Guys east of here have seen it peak in FM.

As we get deeper into December, this will increase, peaking between Christmas (I'm sorry -- that's not "PC" anymore. We'll say "The Holiday") and New Year.

Keep those radios on.

I was getting impenetrable mess on 2 today, the kind usually seen when tropo (I was getting WAGA-5, WPXA-14, WGCL-46, and WATC-57 from Atlanta then, so WSB was probably coming in) and Es collide. The only identifiable thing I caught was a second of infomercial, which wasn't on WSB per their schedule(they would've had football as the time).

I wish I still have over-the-air TV reception, especially at this time of year (December Co-Channel season).

I still remember the week before Christmas 1997 (actually, it was just about 2 or 3 days before Christmastime), and from my second story apartment here in Storm Lake, Iowa (with my indoor antenna), I was picking up QUITE A FEW UHF stations that day!!

I was picking up...

KCWB (now KCWE) - WB 29, Kansas City
KMCI Ch. 38 (38 - Family Greats at that time) out of Lawrence, KS.
KSHB NBC 41 Kansas City
KPXR Ch. 48 (Paxson-owned) out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa
KTKA ABC 49 Topeka, KS
Ch. 50 (another Paxson-owned station) out of Kansas City
KSMO Ch. 62 (now WB) Kansas City

And at other times in December, I picked up...

KXVO WB 15 Omaha, NE
KYNE PBS/NETV 26 Omaha, NE
KHIN PBS/IPTV 36 Red Oak, IA

Too bad I live in another apartment now, on ground level, and can't as easily use my indoor antenna (I have digital cable now), cuz co-channelling in December was a TREAT to see during the Holiday season!! It reminded me of when I was a kid growing up in the 1970's, when we only had over-the-air TV reception!! :)

Storm Lake, ya say? I'm not too far from you (St. Paul, MN), and am sorta familiar with your area, since I did my undergrad at ISU in Ames. (Used to hear SL all the time on 101.7, fighting with the deep fringes of the KUNI translator out of Des Moines.) Nice to see a fellow DXer in (at least the fringes of) the neighborhood! :)

By the way, do you get many Minneapolis-St. Paul stations down there? Up here, I'll occasionally pull in the rocker on 97.9 out of Sioux City -- usually requires tropo, but there are a few high hills where my car will pull it in any time of day. (South of here on 97.9, it's outright warfare between the Sioux City signal and KCMR out of Mason City.) 99.9 Austin used to be a reliable proposition -- though locals on 99.5 and 100.3 have recently gone to HDRadio (with all its attendant hash), making it a rare day when I can hear it at all, unless I'm out in the burbs for some reason. These are the closest signals to Storm Lake that I've managed to get, save for the VERY occasional appearance of 103.9-KUOO through the adjacent from our local on 104.1.

As for television, the Mason City station on 3 makes a regular appearance at my parents' place in the south Twin Cities suburbs, and afforded me a unique opportunity to explain to Mom the joys of tropo one day when she had just shut off the VCR. ;)

Hey I have picked up 3 up out of Mason City all the way from Dallas using my antenna VU-75XR I picked it up the day I rought my antenna which was on the 28th of December my dads birthday. I already had it up not quite 30 minutes and E-skip already came rolling in. WBTV out of the Carolina's, and 3 out of vegas were other stations I picked up<P ID="signature">______________

That is SO COOL!! :)

Too bad I live in a location now here in Storm Lake where I don't get as good a reception as I did downtown when it comes to my indoor antenna.

Ever since moving to the north part of town, and having digital cable again, I haven't tuned in any over-the-air TV programming.

I'm not even sure I'd be able to get very good reception of over-the-air TV in my building, since I'm in a cottage building, in the northeast apartment (of 4 apartments), and the building is mostly brick.

But I LOVE hearing about DX reception this time of year!! :)
