E-skip opening, 6/4/08

Nice lunch time break. Received KQTV/2 (ABC) St. Joseph, MO and KGAN/2 (CBS) Des Moines, IA this afternoon with nothing more than my trusty RCA handheld color set. Since this is THE last season for VHF-lo e-skip (analog), I make it a point to bring my set to work. Hard to believe that, other than the times when I visit these areas in person, I will never see these e-skip targets again. (sigh.......).

From the top of a parking garage in New Brunswick, NJ between 2-3 PM today
92.9 KTGL Lincoln, NE
94.1 KQCH Omaha, NE
98.1 KFGE Milford, NE
96.9 KZKX Seward, NE
97.3 KHKI Des Moines, IA
96.1 KQBW Omaha, NE
107.7 KSYZ Grand Island, NE
97.7 KBBX Nebraska City, NE
96.5 WMT Cedar Rapids, IA
93.7 KKRL Carroll, IA
94.3 WQPC Prarie Du Chien, WI
97.3 KMXC Sioux Falls, SD
104.7 KKLS Sioux Falls, SD

Here in Wilkes-Barre, PA - Was listening to one of my "local" hot AC stations today - 106.5 WFYY Bloomsburg - when my car radio's HD light starts blinking. Then, "WOLF-FM" pops up on the display and I get a second or two of audio that isn't WFYY. I'm pretty sure it was WDAF-FM "106.5 The Wolf" out of Kansas City.

(Side note: That kind of irritates me when a station puts its nickname, instead of call letters, on the HD radio display.)

Was in the Lehigh Valley (Whitehall, Pa) at 2:50 today, Recieved mix 97 (97.3) from Sioux city. Then heard country music overtaking Local 98.1 WOGL. I then had to leave the car. Bummer

KGAN is actually Cedar Rapids, not Des Moines, and it's known for having a terrible signal, often not even effectively covering the city. That's a nice catch, whether it's 5 miles away or futher out.

I live in Nashville, TN and was catching some great signals yesterday from Upstate NY and Canada.

101.5 The Fox (The Seaway Valley CLassic hits)

99.5 The Moose (Not sure location)

101.7 (French, I assume Quebec. I don't speak French..wee)

92.3 from Ottawa Canada.

A few more but was never able to id them.

I noted Es in Coldwater, MI in the 1:00 hour. Another opening to I suspect Manitoba around 4:00 and one more time around 10:00 PM. The 1:00 opening was the best and the last two were probably the most unstable Es i've ever worked. I heard several stations, but was only able to positively ID four new ones and one very interesting relog.

88.5- WFDD- Winston-Salem, NC- 487 miles
89.9- WDAV- Davidson, NC- 502 miles
93.1- WPAW- Winston-Salem, NC- 477 miles
94.1- WTHZ- Lexington, NC- 487 miles

And an interesting sidenote, I also heard 93.9 WMEV Marion, VA via Es. I logged them via Tr in 2006. And at 394 miles they shatter my shortest Es record by almost 80 miles.

I know Es under 500 miles are pretty uncommon, so this was a real treat.

2 UNID E's 6/4/08

Both heard between 3 and 3:30PM in truck while a storm was going thorough Harrisburg PA!

“Cool 98” ID at 3:10PM with I believes Eddie Money song, Stevie Wonder’s “Once In My Life” and Simon and Garfunkle.

“Sunny 98” ID at 3:20PM.
Frequency was 98.3 :-\

Both heard in 2000 Chevy S-10 and Sony Explode receiver. It sucks trying to DX when you are driving! J

I can help you with a couple of these stations. 101.5 the fox is from Canton New York, 92.3 is CJET from Smiths Falls, just outside of Ottawa, mostly a suburban/edge of the city signa at 10 thousand wattsl, and 101.7 is called CHIP, it's actually bilingual, it does originate in Quebec, just northwest of Ottawa, and mostly serves smaller towns west of the city, and is only receivable here in the western suburb of Kanata. CHIP runs 11 thousand watts.

heard 103.7 yesterday
modern rock and country both toot weak to identify.

one of them (classic rock) was WOOL or WQOL (they ID like it's a satellite service)
and heard a K on the country ID (very weak)

the other had too much QRM.
(pensacola, fl is my location)

Thanks for the info. 101.7 CHIP was the one coming in the best. Sounded as local as stations here in Nashville. Was able to pick them up for about two hours all together.(all I heard was French, but I was scanning to catch other stations) As for the other post, yeah it sucks trying to DX while driving!!!!

As you can probably tell I'm an amateur at this but have been doing it since 1991. I remember the first time I found that this kind of thing happened. I was living in the Western part of VA and was picking up stations from TX. WACO, KPLX, KILT KAJA. I was blown away. Fun stuff, and have wanted to explore more in depth just never found the time. If anyone has any pointers on equipment and such, I would love to learn more. All of mine has been done on either a car receiver or a tabletop. (please don't laugh...much!)

Thanks

excuse my language heer. but holy shit! last night i was playing with my phillips stereo here in altamonte springs florida at 11:30 PM eastern standard time and i recieved "jammin 99.9" all the way from wilmington s.c.. i nearly dropped my laptop when i heard that. i was like "holy shit! that was an amazing skip". i also got stations from jacksonville and georgia last night. it was quite a good night for dx lastnight. anyone know when the next skip opening is and is there a site to find out? that would be great. that way i know when to go in my grand father's car and play with the radio. thanks all.

Your reception of South Carolina stations in Florida was probably tropo, especially since it happened that late. You can see tropo predictions at http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html

E-skip hits without warning. You could be listening to a local station, and suddenly, a distant station cuts in. It tends to peak in late spring/summer. If you're driving when an e-skip hits, you may just have to pull over and scan the dial.

do ES usually happen in the day?

and someone should set up some kind of system so when someone reports an ES, everyone on the board who signs up for the alert will know about it.

that'd be pretty damn cool

On Tuesday night, I was getting the exact opposite of what austingrace was getting. I was getting almost all of the Orlando FM stations, especially 105.9 and 107.7, which were clear as a bell even in Charleston. I was also getting XL106.7, and several other stations from there, and I was hoping to get Tampa, but the stupid IBOC noise on most of our FM stations blocked a chance out.

I was also picking up "97 Country" WPCV from Winter Haven, FL, and the Spanish station on 98.7 from Jacksonville, NC. Jammin 99.9 is actually from Wilmington, NC, and it is a very good catch down in the Orlando area.

I frequently get them in Charleston, even with a first adjacent on 99.7.

Even on my little rabbit ears TV, I was getting a good WSAV signal from Savannah, along with channels 6 and 9 from Orlando, 9 with the best signal.

Being on the coast is a fantastic advantage when it comes to summer DXing. When I was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station New River NC (1987-1989), stations like 96 Wave, 95SX, and Hot 99.7 from Port Royal would come blasting in on my FM Car Radio so strong they would even bleed over to the next spot on their respective FM Dials.

Perhaps someone could help with a minor catch from a casual FM DXer (I was always AM except on those incredibly riveting Trope or eSkip occasions).

We're NEPA here, and were driving around 1PM that day. Semi-local WMGH Tamaqua 105.5 wasn't in evidence in the least. Something that called itself simply 'The Q' was. They played 'I Love A Rainy Night', which could, really, be any caucasian format nowadays.

I didn't get to the dials at home until later. Too much going on at the time.

T i a !

From 35 miles north of Victoria, Texas I picked up WRVV Harrisburg, Pennsylvania I picked up a few others but I didnt get a ID.
