E-skip returns 7/10/24: several new to KS/CO

After several days of a summer slump, the E-skip returned to WA this morning. Noticed DX signals up through 96.3 and eventually found stuff that was higher on the band. KS/CO/OK/NE heard.

9:39AM (PT) - 93.1 KRVN-FM Lexington, NE; with a commercial for the Dawson County Fair in Lexington, July 17th-21st. Relog, 100KW at 1,113 miles.
9:40AM - 97.5 KJCK Junction City, KS; ID 'Power Hits 97-5'. NEW #865, 100KW at 1,305 miles.
9:42AM - 101.5 KMKF Manhattan, KS; 'Fly by Night' Rush, ID 101.5 K-ROCK. NEW to Yakima logbook, #866, 37KW at 1,315 miles. Previously heard in Ellensburg in 2021.
9:45AM - 94.1 KDNS Downs, KS; local ads, ID 'KD Country 94.' Relog, 28KW at 1,221 miles. MUF through 103.9 at this point (rock station), also briefly 'Islands in the Stream' Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton on 105.5, probably KVSV Beloit.
9:48AM - 99.9 KSKG Salina, KS; promo for tomorrow's Bobby Bones show on 99KG Country. NEW to Yakima logbook, #867, 100KW at 1,283 miles. HD *off the air* from adjacent local - woot woot! Heard previously in Ellensburg in July 2021.
9:50AM - 100.7 KHOK Hoisington, KS; midday market update and RDS, song/artist 'on 100.7 Eagle Country.' Relog, 100KW at 1,236 miles.
9:57AM - 90.5 KZNA Hill City, KS; High Plains Mornings, promos. Relog, 100KW at 1,161 miles
9:58AM - 91.7 KZAN Hays, KS; same promos as KZNA-90.5, they are also a High Plains Public Radio station. NEW #868, 7.5KW at 1,194 miles.
9:59AM - 92.7 KZUH Minneapolis, KS; KJIL and KJRL IDs, listing off other stations, support messages, weather forecast with Sally Russell. NEW to Yakima logbook, #869, 50KW at 1,270 miles. Heard in Ellensburg 7/14/21 when they were top 40.
10:01AM - 91.3 UNID K-LOVE, with 'So Will I (100 Billion X)' by Hillsong // 103.1 local, and in great fashion, faded out completely before the local ID. Assumed KLZV Brush CO.
10:05AM - 96.3 KERP Ingalls, KS; ad for insurance agent in Cimarron KS, classic country block at noontime. Relog, 100KW at 1191 miles.
10:09AM - 99.5 KHAZ Hays, KS; local ads, Ellis County Fair, 99.5 KZ Country ID. NEW #870, 100KW at 1,194 miles.
10:14AM - 105.9 KSSA Ingalls, KS; La Ke Buena ID. NEW to Yakima logbook, #871, 100KW at 1,192 miles.
10:17AM - 95.5 KAHE Dodge City, KS; 'Superhits' with Robert Palmer 'Addicted to Love,' other songs. Relog (too many times but 1st time this season), 100KW at 1,202 miles.
10:21AM - 91.5 KUNC Greeley, CO; a tough one with the CSN translator...took it out, got partial ID, some support messages and just briefly (!), RDS PI popped up on the TEF6686, "4624", matching the database. Station was airing NPR's 1A. NEW #872, 36KW at 866 miles. Shortest log, by far, in this opening. Briefly had Spanish on 92.1 (probably Denver), religious on 94.7 (probably Denver) and for several minutes, preaching/teaching on 89.7 (Loveland?) but no IDs.
10:26AM - 97.3 KKJQ Garden City, KS; local ads for United Telecom, Western Kansas Irrigation serving Garden City and surrounding area. Relog, 100KW at 1,192 miles.
10:39AM - 95.1 KATC-FM Colorado Springs, CO; briefly with ID 'Cat Country 95.1'. Relog, 58KW at 963 miles.
10:41AM - 90.9 KJHL Boise City, OK; stream match to 'That's My King' by CeCe Winans. Relog, 10KW at 1151 miles.
A few fadeups after that until 11:00AM TOH, unid K-LOVE 90.9 with Colton Dixon 'Build a Boat', national news on 96.5, rock music on 93.9, and all gone after that.
Nice opening - definitely needed that! Audio going up later this week.
 
Conditions went crazy tonight!!

After a teaser of Grand Junction FMs, the band went quiet for 10 minutes, then blew up into the biggest, most intense opening I have heard since last year. MANY new stations from NM, UT, etc. and short distances, even up high. Too many to ID, too little time, but the TEF6686 knocked out a lot of newbies.

7:25PM (PT) - 94.1 KKXK Montrose, CO; with Carrie Underwood 'Blown Away,' full RDS including Radiotext '94 Kix Country - Like us on Facebook @94KixCountry'. Relog, 90KW at 870 miles.
7:26PM - 92.3 KMOZ Grand Junction, CO; more RDS, with title/artist and PI 3135. Relog, 100KW at 792 miles.
7:28PM - 88.3 KPRH Montrose, CO; RDS triggered, with Fresh Air and CPR News mentions. Relog, 3.5KW at 866 miles.
7:33PM - 95.1 KKNN Delta, CO; briefly in with syndicated show, RDS PI 2BC7, not enough to even snap a picture. NEW #873, 100KW at 822 miles.
Skip faded out for about 20 minutes, then came back with a vengeance! At the 8:00 TOH, I tried (unsuccessfully) to ID several non-comm stations. 89.9 with a vintage jazz vocal (probably KUNM) wiped out the Air1 translator. Another on 89.7 with soft piano music, likely religious, went right through the 8:00 PT/9:00 MT TOH with no ID. Another 89.7 with Christian Contemporary (no idea). A 91.7 with alternative pop, song ended around 8:02, and the announcer was a kid, maybe in 5th grade! He boasted that the next song was a 'request' and did not give an ID. So I went up to the commercial band and found multi-swapping on several channels, big signals, and we continue on with:

8:04PM - 100.7 KXXQ Milan, NM; Relevant Radio programming and RDS. NEW #874, 100KW at exactly 1,000 miles. Another 100.7 kept fading in with '80s music, probably The Vault in Grand Junction, but no ID.
8:07PM - 97.1 KCYN Moab, UT; with Johnny Cash song and full RDS, PS KCYN, Radiotext mentioned KCYN Canyon Country and something about 'The Adventure'. Relog, 29KW at 799 miles.
8:07PM - 97.3 KKSS Santa Fe, NM; with top 40 music and RDS 2C4E, huge signal. Relog, 94KW at 1042 miles. Es was up through the top of the band at this point.
8:08PM - 105.5 KTRZ-FM Taos, NM; with rock music and RDS PI 43FF, PS 'KTRZ-FM'. NEW #875, 4KW at 1045 miles. Had an UNID 105.1 with pop music, 104.7 with Spanish religion (no doubt ABQ, a relog), 106.7 with hymns, 107.1 with religion, 106.3 SS (KXOT?), 103.7 oldies (KYVA?) mixed with soft AC (KSNN?), and a 103.9 with a talk program (not sure who).
8:12PM - 104.3 KSOP-FM Salt Lake City, UT; mixing with likely Grand Junction, PI 4103 and RDS ID "Z104". NEW #876, 25KW at only 586 miles!! I have had KBER and KZNS on Es from Salt Lake, but never at this high frequency. The distance on 104.3 mHz meant that the E-skip was likely reaching the 2-meter ham band or higher.
8:13PM - 103.3 KDRF Albuquerque, NM; ID '103-3 Ed FM, Playing Stuff We Like.' Relog, 20KW at 1075 miles.
8:14PM - 101.9 KHTB Ogden, UT; top 40 pop song, RDS PI 246B and saw "POWER" in the RDS. NEW #877, 25KW, also at 586 miles.
8:15PM - 100.3 KSFI Salt Lake City, UT; ID "FM100.3" and RDS. Relog (heard via meteor scatter in 2015), 25KW at 586 miles. They become another 'double play' - heard via e-skip and meteor scatter. There are a few logged by both modes in my logbook.
8:15PM - 98.5 KABG Los Alamos, NM; with Michael Jackson, RDS A120. Relog, 100KW at 1042 miles.
8:17PM - 104.5 KKFG Bloomfield, NM; OVER LOCAL TRANSLATOR, with plenty of national ads, and finally a slam dunk ID 'Four Corners' Greatest Hits, Kool 104-5.' NEW #878, 100KW at 951 miles. This was previously heard in Kittitas County on July 7th, 2020, where I drove all the way to Lost Lake/Manastash Lake only to find Es all over the band - and my previous plan to hike - aborted to DX. It was one of the most memorable openings I've had, given that I was nearly 5,000 feet up and a lot of longer skip made it through.
8:18PM - 98.7 KRTZ Cortez, CO; quickly scanned down here to find local KMNA *also* wiped out! Dionne Warwick 'I'll Never Love This Way Again,' and KRTZ slam-dunk ID in the Radiotext. NEW #879, 27KW at 884 miles. Another one heard in the Kittitas County hills on 7/7/20.
8:20PM - 100.1 KWSA Price, UT; Jack FM ID, also full RDS: PI 0000, KWSA-FM in the PS and Radiotext 'KWSA Jack-FM 100.1'. NEW #880, 3KW at 692 miles.
8:21PM - 99.9 KEKB Fruita, CO; several local ads, PI "1B95" and "99.9KEKB" RDS. NEW #881, 79KW at 792 miles. Previously heard in Ellensburg 7/1/2021.
8:22PM - 102.1 KTRA-FM Farmington, NM; partial ID '#1 Country, 102..." in and out with KPQ, but it was local-strength during music ('Try That in a Small Town,' Jason Aldean). Relog, 100KW at 938 miles.
8:24PM - 102.3 K272FT Montrose, CO; trying to ID an UNID SS station (Randolph UT?), faded up with slam-dunk ID "92-3 The Moose". NEW #882, 250W at 854 miles.
8:27PM - 96.3 KKOB-FM Albuquerque, NM; Mark Levin show and RDS. Relog, 17.5KW at 1075 miles.
8:28PM - 91.7 KTGW Fruitland, NM; Passion Radio Network community calendar with mention of a vacation Bible school next week in Farmington. Relog, 12KW at 933 miles.
Unfortunately, skip died for good after that! It was just getting going, and I would have been even more happier with another 1/2 hour to clean house on the rest of SLC...but I'll take what I can get.

Translators/locals wiped out at one point: 88.9 (briefly), 89.9, 92.5, 103.5 (Briefly), 102.5 (likely by KIOT NM), and aforementioned 102.1/98.7/103.5. Had I taken the car up into the Wenas, I'd expect this list would double.
