E-Skip...

This Afternoon (7-22-08) I Was Sitting In My Car And I Browsed Through The FM Band and This Is What I Got:

WMSO 101.3 (Miss 101) From Mississippi ( Got It Crystal Clear In Stereo For A Half Hour)

Undifined Hip Hop Station On 97.1

Undifined Rock Station On 98.1

And Lots Of Other Stations Battleing Each other On A Number Of Other Frequencies.

Anyone Else Experience This...

97.1 Hot 97 New York ?

Highly unlikely with "Hot 97.1, NYC". E-skip mainly occurs with reception from an FM station situated 500-1500 miles away from the listener's location. WQHT/97.1 in New York is too close for Sporadic-E skip reception (about 200 miles from Boston). If you get WQHT up here, it's more than likely because of Tropospheric bending, airline scatter or possibly meteor scatter.

I've had a lot of experience in listening to FM DX over the past 40 years. So far, I have logged over 400 FM stations in 36 states. It's been a long while since I've had the opportunity to spend some time scanning the bands. Since summertime is THE time for E-skip, there's no better time than the present. Around this time (late July/early August) this is usually the tail end of the yearly skip season where it begins to be less frequent. There is usually a reprise during a period of a few days before and after the winter solstice (Dec 21st). So if you don't get your fill of DX this summer, don't fret. :'( Try the days around the winter solstice. ;D You'd be amazed on what you'll find. On 12/21/92, I got MANY FM stations from the Upper Midwest including many in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota and toward the end of that long night of skip, I got Winnipeg's CITI/92.1 ("Cee-Tee FM") in full Stereo. Many stations were arriving at my location at local strength. Check out some of the archived DX audio I have on RadioDXer.net .
