Im looking for intel for the scripps group in Knoxville. Foot in the door type stuff. Are hires done in house or all through corporate? Who are the programming decision makers?

All info greatly appreciated.

While today a manager is generally hired by corporate, the local staff is pretty usually hired by the manager and the local department heads and the company or cluster HR person.

Chris Protzman is listed as the SVP/Manager with Joey Tack the PD of WKHT, Kevin King at WCYU and Rich Bailey for WNOX and WWST.

A first step is to search for openings under the call letters and the company name for the market. The first contact is often the HR person who will do some background checking such as making sure the person meets the specified qualification before referring the CVs to the appropriate department head.

Frank Murphy is the PD of WNOX (and a heck of a nice guy and pretty easy to meet if you're in town). Ben McWhorter is the local sales manager and he has a standing ad and offer to meet informally with candidates. I'd start by getting to know the local folks.

My suggestion is always to just send the PD's a tape and resume and see what happens. Of all the radio jobs I've gotten, only one came from answering a help wanted ad. Every other one was me sending something to someone, and they called me after a position opened up unexpectedly.
