Eagle 97 "Rock of the 80's"

Sometime after I moved to the area in 1981, I remember the Eagle dropped their standard CHR format for "Rock of the 80's", playing new wave and alternative music in a format seemingly modeled on KROQ Los Angeles. They kept Stevens and Pruitt in the morning (it was amusing to hear S&P introducing songs from the Psychedelic Furs and Echo and the Bunnymen). It didn't last long and I can't find anything about this online except a brief mention on dfwretroplex.com. Does anyone remember this and have any background information (was it consulted by Rick Carroll?)? I was a fan of KROQ having heard it while visiting LA and was disappointed that it didn't last here. At least tell me I'm not hallucinating the whole thing.

After that ended, other than George Gimarc's Sunday night show on KZEW and some shows on KNON, alternative music didn't return until the Edge came in 1989.

KEGL "Eagle 97" moved from a rock-based CHR to "Rock Of The 80s", based on Rick Carroll's KROQ model, on Sept. 27, 1982. It was moved from Radio & Records' CHR reporting panel to the AOR reporting panel the following May.
On Sept. 12, 1984, the station moved back to straight forward CHR as "All Hit 97.1 KEGL, The Eagle" to take on KAFM, which had the resurging CHR format all to itself (KTKS 106.1 also flipped to CHR the same week.)

Thanks for the information.

A friend who lived near Dallas in the early eighties remembers the new wave format on KEGL quite fondly. I never heard it myself, since I moved to Dallas in 1984, right before they flipped to CHR (albeit, I'd say it was a rock-leaning take on the format).

Somewhere around 1984 - 1986 my father made a 3 hour recording of "All Hit...KEGL". It is pretty much straight up CHR. From memory, some of the songs: ...Died In Your Arms - Cutting Crew, Hold Me Now - Thompson Twins, Live To Tell - Madonna, ...Go Away - Paul Young, etc...
