It is most definitely not their musical selections giving them the big jump in ratings. I attribute it to Walton & Johnson in the morning and LSU sports. Think about it. W&J has huge appeal to blue collar white males of all ages. I understand that "you" may hate them and their political leanings but males in South Louisiana aren't exactly tree hugging hippies who sip lattes with their pinky finger sticking out. Who else offers this? No one. LSU football went undefeated until that until the high tided rolled over them. LSU Baseball also did fairly well this past spring. Will Eagle see as big as a bump from baseball as they did from football? Most likely not. Who else within the city of BR originating any type of a rock format? I know KRDJ from Lafayette and 92.3 cover BR quite well. I hear that KRDJ comes in quite well as far as ratings go with no street presence in BR nor programming content specifically for BR.
Eagle 98.1 is the only stations that offers with it offers to it's audience. It's like being the only burger joint in town and then McDonald's, Burger King or Wendy's start popping up to take away from your clientele. They need direct competition to chip away at their numbers. But they have it locked down with W&J and LSU sports. I find it unrealistic that a liberal leaning rock station with a second tier university sports coverage with knock the king off the mountain. Yes you can can have another rocker come online with and expanded and BETTER playlist. The same 5 Led Zepplin, 3 Skynnard, and 3 Doobie Bros. songs get old and quick. Do you grow with your audience or do you grow with your demo. Anyone under the age of 40 was probably made in the back seat of their daddy's pick up truck while listening to the core group of artists on the Eagle. Classic to anyone 30 and under is 80's hair bands and 90's alternative. And 21 year olds are as old as the "Black Album" by Metallica and Nirvana's "Nevermind". When the music you play can in theory buy itself a cold beer and a scratch off ticket and your audience can't...that is called a generation gap. The music on Eagle is music that your grand daddy listens to and that is just not cool, dude.
