No Negativity...Just the Facts
I don't think we can just look at Mr. Walker. What happens nowadays is that the on-air talent (when they are live) have so many restrictions placed on them that they can't really do justice to any important news story, weather event etc. What so many don't seem to understand is that when events such as what is described here occurs (I did not here this either) radio stations suffer credibility issues with the listener. Originally it was reported, I believe, that the miners were found alive. But that news obviously changed. The danger is that even major events have to be formatted. Stations do not rely on the good judgement of their talent. The problem with voice tracking a news worthy event is that no one seems to be staying on top of changing elements of a story. It would have been far better for Eagle or anyone else for that matter to say something like, "CNN has reported that the miners were found alive. We'll have more on this as it develops. Stay tuned." Should something change, the talent should be able to provide the very latest information. Far less risky and improved credibility.
I noticed on the Georgia board a discussion about negativity and how it seems to be a big part of the comments on these boards. There will always be those who have nothing good to say about anything. But I think when there are significant issues such as not being prepared, sloppy programming, misinformation etc. etc.; I don't think its being negative. It's just calling it as it really is. Don't shoot the messengers for bringing these things up for discussion - blame the incompetence of those who are supposed to be radio professionals.
