Eagles radio broadcasts

I just noticed yesterday that if you listen to the Eagles games on
WIP radio, they were about 10 seconds ahead of the Fox sports
TV broadcast. So if you wanted to get a heads up that a big
play was coming very soon, you could listen to the radio while
you did something else and when you hear the announcer screaming
you have advance warning to get back into the viewing area.

If only the Phillies radio broadcasts gave us a similar advance
notice of big plays that would be more useful, since I tend to
channel surf between innings of baseball games and sometimes
get distracted from the game.

The Eagles games on WIP are supposed to be 100% live, meant to be used by people wearing headphones at games. (This purpose only applies during home games, but they're still live during road games). The WYSP broadcast is supposed to be synced with the TV broadcast. Luckily it's behind the HDTV broadcast, so I can pause my TiVo to sync the two. If it was ahead of the HDTV broadcast, there's nothing to pause on the radio side.

Merrill Reese is a nice person and longtime Philadelphia community contributor, but he is not a good nuts and bolts RADIO play-by-play announcer. Too often after a game when you hear the Eagles audio highlights put up against the Eagles video highlights they’re a match, because his radio play-by-play is really TV play-by-play and we SEE the highlights, thus the audio matches up. His call of the Eagles first play from scrimmage long TD pass from Vick to Jackson in the Monday night game at Washington a couple of weeks back was an example of the lack of his radio call abilities. Simply not enough visual description and exact location AHEAD of the action that the radio audience does not have the advantage of seeing for themselves. Yet, perception is reality and folks in Philadelphia think he does a great job. Enthusiasm, great guy, tribute to the community yes. RADIO play-by-play abilities, no.

I don't usually listen to the radio during Eagles games and I forgot that WIP only
broadcasts some of the games.

I wonder why WYSP allows WIP to also have the games since they
must be paying a lot of money to have that contract ?

Do WYSP and WIP have the same owner ?

I find where Merrill avoids nuts and bolts radio play by play is mostly done because he's trying to be a color commentator also. Don't know that I've ever heard a pbp guy quite so inclined to guess at plays coming and maybe leading MQ into comment. Nuts and bolts defintion of a pbp gyuy may have a little latitude in its definition, but no matter how far Merrill is from a classic definition, I enjoy his work, which isn't to say you were complaining, just an added point.

Which TV broadcast, live ota, Xfinity HD, Xfinity SD, Fios HD, Fios SD, DirecTv HD, DirecTv SD, Dish...?

I have DirecTv and Xfinity. Those 4 don't match up. My brother has Fios. If I'm watching a game on DirecTv, I think I'm ahead of him. If I watch on Xfinity, he is ahead.

Back when they announced that WIP would be carrying the games in addition to WYSP, it was supposed to be the SD feed of the local TV affiliate of whatever network, as received via Comcast (I assume with a Comcast non-DVR box). At the time it was assumed that more people would be watching that way than any other way.

Don't know if they've changed it since then, but it's definitely not synced to the Comcast HD feed. It's behind that, thankfully.

Recently the Redskins mini-network in DC (which is actually owned by Dan Snyder) announced that it is purposefully delaying the feed to be behind every TV broadcast, so that people can use their DVRs to synchronize TV with radio.

What does Merrill Reese's stake in a small suburban hobby station have to do with any of this?

Maybe CBS made (another) huge mistake years ago when they stopped using announcers assigned to each team for the play by play fed to each team's territory. Jack Whittaker and Tom Brookshier did all Eagles game (away and home). The other team's announcers did play by play fed to the other team's territory. Video in both markets was the same. Seems like a much better system.

That said, most people don't care and don't bother to listen to the radio during games. Those that do care should do what has already been suggested: Use your Tivo or other DVR to get the picture in sync with the radio.

Nobody with a conscience should watch, listen to or attend any NFL games as long as Michael Vick is allowed to play.

WIP always does the games, but sometimes they leave the game or join it in progress if the Flyers or Sixers are playing.
