He was a meteorologist on two Reidsville radio stations in the 70s. Most TV stations didn't have meteorologists then. His weather reports were very detailed.
I recorded some of his weather reports but instead of keeping them all, reused the same tape. I finally remembered to do the preparation necessary to re-record from the original tape, using a patchcord and a pair of cassette recorders, but it wasn't what I was hoping for.
At least the tape wasn't completely lost. Several years ago when I decided to do this, the cassette player, despite being fairly expensive and from Radio Shack, wasn't working. I later found out it was the cassette player that was the problem, and bought a cheap machine from Kmart.
But what I have is a few seconds from several different broadcasts (that is where I stopped the tape that has the re-recording when I ejected) followed by a fairly long sample from one of Mr. Burton's weather reports. It's not the whole thing, because the original has my voice saying I re-recorded Mr. Burton and the tape I used to do that was bad. Apparently this means that's all I have, or maybe I need to try more tapes. At the very start of the re-recording is another very brief sample of Mr. Burton.
I edited out my voice from the re-recording. It's not as embarrassing as it would have been hearing my voice when I was a few years younger than that, but still ...
Not knowing how else to share it, I asked Matt Smith (who posts on this site) by private message if he'd like it. He said yes. So the re-recording is on its way to him now by snail mail. He can read two paragraphs above what he needs to do. If any of you want to hear what I have, I'm sure he'll be nice enough to find a way. And there's a lot more good stuff on there if he'd like to share through YouTube or whatever, if it's allowed. Lots of classic commercials from the era (Listerine must work because it tastes bad) and some music from "Hee Haw", plus TV theme songs. And Wolfman Jack announcing who would be on "Midnight Special".
