Earl Scruggs dead at age 88

I heard his obit on one of the national radio newscast yesterday afternoon (maybe Fox News Radio?) and they described Scruggs as a "country singer."

Now, I never knew Earl to be a singer. Did I miss something?

Probably the person didn't know there was ever a time when country music had great instrumentalists.

I wonder how many fans of Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum and Carrie Underwood even know or care who Earl Scruggs was.

I heard this on Fox news also. The reporter didn't have a clue!

I only own one of their albums, Nasville Airplane, which came out in 1968 (I have the dj copy). But I liked it.

I probably should have listed Taylor Swift, who actually plays the banjo. I'm told she doesn't play it like Earl Scruggs, and that she wasn't just pretending when she performed "Mean" at one of the awards shows.

But her fans for the most part don't care about Earl Scruggs.

A woman I went to high school with is named Scruggs and had a giant picture of herself with a banjo on Facebook last week. She doesn't actually play, though she is a relative.
