Early 1960s NYC AM Radio!

I still get a thrill coming into NYC from Liberty Airport and seeing WMCA's three towers. Visiting their studios in the early 60s, they had modified 16-inch transcription turntables for 45 rpm. Remember the capstan custom sleeves? RCA 44 senior velocity and 77 mics.

That was such a great time in NYC radio! In 1961, you had WMCA, WINS, WMGM and a newcomer, 50 kW blaster WABC. WMCA with 5 kW regularly beat WMGM and WINS. WMGM left top 40 in '62 to flip to WHN. WINS flipped to all-news in '65. NYC radio will never be the same! :)

Thanks for posting! That was a great time for New York radio. I wish I had stayed in the city. Wife and I go back every other year for AES and to reminisce.

I was a draftee stationed at Governors Island from Nov 61-Nov 63. I had been selected by Uncle Sam for the hazards of working in the Fort Jay Dental Clinic. Tough job, but a South Dakota farm boy was up to the challenge. I'd been taken away from a TV engineer job. But my heart was in radio.

Every morning we were awakened to WABC's Herb Oscar Anderson/HOA playing Bert Kaempfert's "The Happy Feeling." He sang along with the lyrics from the Sugar Bush Polka, which used the same melody. Of course, the song went back further as a sugar cane harvest song in Africa. He'd start with that or alternately with "Hello Again." Or "Boost the Mets." :) It was a joy to find out that New Yorkers are really small town folks at heart. HOA came from 50K WDGY in Minneapolis. Ironically, they were on the same 1130 AM frequency as WNEW.

I'll be back with much more music. :)
