Early Morning AM DX

Had some early morning AM DX Monday morning around 5am on 740 kilocycles. Did not hear WJIB but CFZM 740 (Zoomer Radio) out of Ontario Canada. Solid copy into the Merrimack Valley down 93 towards Boston.

Interesting ride into the office I must say.

Yep, stations to the west of you tend to come in better in the morning before the sun rises. Interestingly enough, stable and consistent catches would be more likely in the daytime, but we have the D layer blocking that, hence why sunrise/sunset can be exotic.

740, in its earlier incarnation as CBL, used to be a regular when I was a kid in Medford. Plus CBM (Montreal 940), CKAC (Montreal 730), CKGM (Montreal 980 and 990), CKLM (1570 Laval/Montreal), CJMS (1280 Montreal). Plus CHUM (Toronto 1050) and CFRB (Toronto 1010). Plus CBA (Moncton NB 1070), CHML (Hamilton ON 900) and last but not least, The Big 8, CKLW (Windsor ON 800). If I was in the car, near the NH state line, then I could also pick up CKVL (850 Verdun/Montreal) battling with WHDH, and CBF (690 Montreal, usually drowned out by WRKO).

The CBC stations (CBL, CBM, CBA) have all moved to FM, as have many other Canadian AM stations. Some of the AM stations that moved have been replaced, but no one seems to want most of the frequencies that were abandoned. It's weird, because USA stations cannot improve their signals if they are on one of the vacant Canadian frequencies even though they have not been used for many years. WMEX before the recent changes, had to protect CJRS in Sherbrooke QC even though they have been off the air since 1994 with no takers for the frequency.

At least the CBC still has the 'big one' on 540 between Saskatoon and Regina. 50kw on 540 plows out over 400 miles by groundwave, and they was in pretty good by skywave last-night here in SE Wyoming. If that one ever bites the dust (I doubt it), then I propose that 540 be re-allocated as a class-B frequency where one of the other Midwestern stations could go up to 50kw daytime and 25kw night-time directional to the north. A good candidate would be KWMT in Fort Dodge, however we would have to adjust WAUK's signal and probably move WXYG. Then, there would be room to plop a new assignment in the Intermountain-west, as KYAH doesn't cover much.

that 740 ALWAYS booms into the Merrimack Valley / I-93 corridor when WJIB is on night power ... all 5 watts of it

listen some afternoon in December when WJIB goes low power, the Canadian 740 walks right in

When WILD 1090 goes off the same thing happens but it is WBAL that booms in like a local
