Early Rock 'N Roll

For the past two Saturday afternoons, early R&R returned to the Houston air waves. It's the Crazy Al Rock 'N Roll Party. It's a 3 hour syndicated show which airs at 4:30 on 1070 KNTH. We are doing some specialty programs on KNTH on the weekends. It fits our demos, so we decided, why not?

I thought 1070 was owned by Salem and religious?! Am I getting my stations mixed up? ???

Salem Communications is a Christian broadcaster. However, not all stations are 'religious. There is a newstalk division. KNTH is a part of that Newstalk group. We have specialty programs on the air on the weekends. Every weekday morning around 5:20, I play one R&R song and give a little history on the song. I do this during Bll Bennett's Morning In America program. This month, I became production/asst. program director in addition to my morning show commentary.

That's Great, Chuck! I guess I was gone from the boards so long that I missed the fact that you were not with KHJZ/CBS Radio Anymore?! Glad the new gig is going well. I'll have to check it out.

I resigned from 95.7 The Wave last month. My last show was on Saturday 1/27. I had a good run at The Wave. It was a lot of fun. I was the 1st male voice there when it began in November 2002. I was at KILT at the time. Jeff Garrison had just became operations manager. I looked at his previous station and discovered that his weekend and overnight slots were covered by voice tracking. I knew the handwriting was on the wall for parttime work. Since I loved smooth jazz, it was a perfect opportunity to go across the hall to KHJZ.

When Salem bought 100.7, they moved their Christian talk format to 100.7. That left 1070AM open for change. Salem was expanding it's newstalk format in other cities and it became Houston's turn. I was called and asked for assistance in putting it together. I started with KNTH two years ago at the enception of the Newstalk format.

In May 2005, I went to work at FM Newschannel 97.5 as a weekend board operator. I started the 1st weekend of its operation. The Scott system was a mess, but we worked through. That 1st weekend was terrible, but it was locked down by the next weekend. I knew it was doomed from the start, because of what happened at KKTL 97 Talk-FM. Been there, done that. However, I did my job as if it was Number 1. Thats just part of my radio work ethic. I left KFNC in March 2006.

By November 2005, I was taken off my Sunday morning shift, which left only Saturday morning on The Wave (2 hours on the air, 2 hours of production during Dave Koz). During that time, the foundation was being laid for change to work for Salem. The legal market for video went south because of changes in bankruptcy law and medical malpractice. I was getting less work. I still do the video on the side. However, it's not enough to make a living. You know how it is, bills have to be paid.

Congratulations on the new job, Mr. Tiller. I missed the r&r show yesterday, but I'll be sure to tune in next week.

I don't listen to KNTH, but, if the program is good, they'll have a new listener (at least on that timeslot) ;D

It's just a shame that the people who have great talent and are local, in ALL markets, are getting pushed aside for voicetracking, satellite, syndication, and other forms of entertainment that have nothing to do with this market, or the people who listen to the stations in this area. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that 1070 takes off and that the format generates big numbers. Chuck, have you ever heard of Herb Kent? He is a Legendary Chicago DJ. He's in the Radio HOF. He does a show on WVAZ V103 on Sunday Mornings called "Love Dusties" and it's classic R&B from the 50's-early 70's. The music is incredible and you won't hear any of it anywhere else, outside of Soul Street on XM, and maybe WDIA in Memphis. But, that's a show I would like to hear in this market, actually it's a show I would like to do. But I will applaud anyone that wants to do something different. And, I applaud the PD's/GM's, and Ownership who will allow their people to try something new. I can't wait to listen to your show on 1070. I hope it generates into good ratings.

Herb "The Cool Gent" Kent was an inspiration to many getting into this business. Yes, he was inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. One morning, about a year ago on my way to work, I got an opportunity to listen to 1070 WDIA. I enjoyed the music. Since KNTH was sitting with an open carrier and NO program, I was able to hear WDIA. When I got to the studio, I discovered the ENCO audio system had crashed. In Japanese, ENCO stands for 'stalled car.' No wonder Humble Oil changed the name from ENCO to Exxon in the early 70s.

Chuck and Snoman:
Agree with comments from both of you. Chuck...you're a pro. All will work out well at new station. Snoman; you are right on target. Not working in broadcasting; but I do have a question: if weekend and overnight slots are covered by voice tracking, then the full timers are doing all the work? For no extra cash? Why not use really good part timers and have them do it (voicetracking)? At least the station will have top notch talent to fill in when full timers are on holiday; or sick, et al. Is creativity out forever in broadcasting?

Not all stations voicetrack weekends. Most of us are still live on KHITS.

I am not for voice tracking, as well. However, it is here to stay. it's not going away. It's their call, not ours. We have to accept it, embrace it and do our jobs. When nobody is at the wheel, sooner or later a problem will occur that will require the use of a professional to make sure the problem is rectified. When I state problems, I include problems outside the station such as inclement weather or breaking news. Houston is a 24 hour town. I am on the road at 3AM, there are cars on the road, businesses are open. Somebody is listening. It may be one; it may be 100, but they're there, listening. Whats really bad is to have over 30 minutes of 'dead air' with someone at the station and doesn't know it's happened.

By the way, I have some advice for all. Monitor the air signal! Do not rely on idiot lights or bells and whistles to tell you, you're having dead air or off the air! I understand there are 7 second and even as much as 15 second delays. If you are on air or on the board, it's your job to make sure it's ON! I hear this happen alot. I've heard it here and all over the dial as well.

Edie, creativity is not out; it's on hold. It's in a cycle. We must be creative within the confines of the time we have on the air. if all you have is 15 seconds, 30 or 60, make the best of it and make it count. It can be done.

chuck:
'k. i'll believe creativity is only on hold. because i'm the optimistic type.
anyway...i saw an ad in all access for 'cumulus looking for talent'. i wonder what format? surely not rock. perhaps cox and cumulus will break the holding pattern. i think they should have 2 hour audition airshifts and let everyone try a shift. if you suck, you suck. if you're not, you're not.
well, back to my regularly scheduled programming.
