When did it start, what was the type of programming and when did current shows of the period start syndicating their network series over indies?
 
In the early 1950's,I would say. One of the first successful syndicated shows on the air at that time,Life With Elizabeth starring Betty White from 1953 to 1955. I could be wrong on this. Now if you are also talking about reruns of network shows,then Amos and Andy would happen to be the first show to be syndicated in reruns followed by Beulah,I Married Joan,My Little Margie,Trouble With Father(Stu Erwin Show),the original Dragnet(running as Badge 714 in syndication),among others.

Actually yes, original series and network reruns. Just curious as of when they came about.
 
If you look at one of the KTLA (Los Angeles) anniversary programs (the 40th and 50th shows come to mind) they talk about a lot of the programs they did, and some of the other stations in town, that were syndicated to stations across the country.

Liberace, Time for Beany (early Beany and Cecil), various KTLA variety shows, and so on.

How did the early syndication work?
Was it like movie theaters where they made many prints and distributed them or did the shows just go from station to station?
 
One thing to remember with the network reruns is many areas of the nation were underserved in the 50s. And many other places only had two stations so they cherry picked programming.

So some people in some areas of the country may have never seen the orginal show in it's original run

That was the original intent behind the reasoning to rename off networks sitcoms so the stations couldn't pass them off as original. Like "Dick Van Dyke Daytime Show," "Ponderosa," "Andy of Mayberry," "Susie," etc
