The highest 12+ ranking I have for CKLW in the Cleveland market is #5 in the Fall of 1970:

WERE 10.9
WIXY 9.6
WDOK-FM 9.0
WJW 7.9
CKLW 7.4

It's a "that was then and this is now" argument, but it's amazing the number one and two stations had and still have horrible coverage.

#5 station, too. There is only one signal in the market that fully covers everything day and night is 1100.

And, depending on which ratings service those numbers are from, the survey area may not have included anything more than Cuyahoga County in 1970.

Not to go back, but I remember KYW/WKYC at one point with Jim Stagg, Jim Runyon, and Jerry G. Bishop nights.
...I seem to recall Fred Winston was at WKYC before hitting Chicago, too...

Fall numbers I posted for Cleveland from 1970 were from Arbitron as reported in the defunct trade magazine Television/Radio Age.

Where was WGAR during this time? I know I use to listen to them at night in NC. around 1980 and they were IMHO pretty good.

WGAR was fairly dead in 1970, the year Brian kindly gave the numbers for. Somewhere around '72, I believe, John Lund became PD and did what was an early gold-based AC format... derisively called Chicken ROck then... and the station did very well under his guidance.

WGAR was great in the mid-late 70s and early 80s, especially if you like personality along with the music. There are a couple of airchecks that survive
