Earth FM

Is it just me, or has EARTH FM been suffering an identity crisis for the better part of the past year? Musically, it’s nearly a different radio station every time I tune in. BTW - I don’t live in the Upstate, but work brings me here at least once a week.

A few weeks ago they were very heavy on the 90s, including rock and grunge. It sounded absolutely ridiculous with their imaging, jingles, and older sounding air staff. Then, next time I tuned in, they were very heavy on the 70s. It’s almost as if it were freeform radio with absolutely no thought or strategy going from one song to another.

I like their packaging and presentation as a classic hits station, but their music logs are atrocious. I also think it’s ironic that The Lake, which positions itself as random with crazy variety, is anything but random. Meanwhile, Earth FM it’s all over the road, musically, with a straight forward classic hits presentation.

1000% agree. I have a lot of respect for everyone involved in that project but the music is bad. The presentation is bad. They generally do have that 90s Alt lean but will then play 80s funk along with it then play something like “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Viva La Vida.” I haven’t noticed much 70s in a long time but the rest is a mess. There’s really no musical focus since they started moving heavily in to the 90s and even 00s.

The imaging and presentation is for a 60s/70s oldies station…not whatever they are now. It shows in the numbers although 25-54/35-54 may have improved. The jingles and imaging are like 10 years old and from when they played oldies. It doesn’t work anymore.

I enjoy the variety on Earth-FM, but perhaps the format should be tweaked a bit. Not sure if there is much of a distinction between classic hits or variety hits. I do like the retro dance party on Friday nights. Brings back good music I remember from the 90's.

This is a sample from their website of the last hour. I’ve heard the music be more erratic, but I don’t think it would be as bad if they positioned it differently than a 60s/70s/80s oldies station.

I wouldn’t mind them going in a new wave/classic alternative type direction since they’re already kind to 90s Alt rock and 80s new wave. Awesome 99.5 can handle the “80s and more” format, as can 102.5 The Lake.
